Traffic Violations
Major Cause
Of Fatalities

in the figures released by the
office of Commissioner of Pub-
lic Safety Ray H Page They
show that out of 423 fatal acci-
dents investigated in 1960 by
the highway patrol only 33 in-
volved no traffic violation
In all accidents investigated
by the patrol last year 1297 or
sightly more than 10 percent
showed no violations This in-
dicates that 93 percent of Okla-
homa's fatal accidents and
nearly 90 percent of all acci-
dents resulted from a violation
of the traffic laws
The most frequent violation
listed in both fatal and non-
fatal accidents was speed too
great for conditions Next in
frequency was failure to yield
the right of way and in third
place was exceeding the posted
speed limit Improper turns
and driving left of center were
also high on the list of acci

dent causes in IMO
There were 20662 drivers in-
volved in all accidents investi-
gated by the patrol Of that
number 2568 or approximately
12 percent had been drinking
In fatal accidents the percent-
age of drinkhig drivers jumped
to nearly 17 percent
According to Page these fig-
ures show that nearly 600 lives
could have been saved last year
traffic laws at all times when
if every driver had observed all
behind the wheel Drinking dri-
vers alone accounted for 79
deaths
"It may seem like Utopia to
expect everyone to drive accor-
ding to the law but this is the
only real answer to traffic safe-
ty Mere's no reason in the
world why all drivers cannot ob-
serve the traffic laws"
"These laws were written by
the legislature for our protec-
tion and if self preservation is
truly the first rule of nature
then drivers certainly should
observe the traffic laws They
can save your life" Page stated
Sneezes Are
Potent
You could practically go in-
to orbit on the propulsive power
of a sneeze Research shows
that a cough or sneeze shoots
out germ-laden droplets at a
rate of 150 ft a second The lar-
ger droplets usually travel for
about five feet before they fall
to the ground They've been
known to hit the twelve-foot
mark thoulgh Small droplets
float onwards and upwards for
hours
Many illnesses including the
common cold flu pneumonia
and tuberculosis are spread
from person to person by jet-
prpelled germs in somebody's
careless cough or sneeze
It is possible to have an in-
fectious illness without know-
ing it So— anvtir-
cough or sateezeL
out a tissue and cover your
mouth and nose A handkerchief
will do as well though it seems
silly to put germs back in your
pocket Paper tissues are best
but dora forget to dispose of
them
Use the same method to pro-
tect yourself if you see some-
one about to cough or sneeze in
your direction
If you catch cold don't pest-
er your doctor for an antibiotics
It won't do any good You can
keep yourself comfortable with
nose drops asprin and cough
syrup But if fever lasts more
than three days or you are
short of breath or have a per-
sistent cough see your doctor at
once
