FATHER DIVINE
DENIES GUILT AS

5000 Followers Crowd Around
Court When Leader Makes
Bail
ly tnited Press
NEW YORK April 23--More
than 5000 half hysterical Negro
and white followers of Father Di-
vine crowded the streets about the
Criminal Courts building today as
the little Negro who is called "God"
by his cult members entered a plea
of riot guilty to charges that he
feloniously assaulted a white man
More than 100 police kept the
crowd moving But they made no
effort to check ecstatic cries of
"peace he's wonderful" when Fath-
er Divine was brought from police
headquarters where he had spent
the night in a cell
Others at Jail
The scene around the court ri-
valed the night-long vigil of 1500
of his followers outside the head-
quarters cell in which he was
placed after his arrest late yester-
day in Milford Conn
"Peace! Peace! Peace!" chorused
the frenzied crowd as the bald
pudgy evangelist stepped from a
prison van
He smiled benignly on his chil-
dren and they responded with a
mighty surge that all but swept
aquads of foot and mounted police-
rnen before It
The Felony Court arraignment

battery of attorneys grouped about
him as the clerk read the charge
that he and three disciples stabbed
and beat Harry Green a Weehawk-

ited one of the Divine "heavens"
with a process server Monday night
Th'e not guilty plea entered
Father Divine was freed on $500
bail pending trial April 30 He
emerged from court to another
jubilant demonstration from his
cohorts and entered a limousine
with a fat unidentified "angel" to
be driven back to "Gods Kingdom
No 1"—his headquarters in Harlem
Miracle Fails
Police found the bald-headed Ne-
gro yesterday hiding behind a
furnace in the basement of a house
In Milford Conn He had tried to
