Homemade
Baby Food
Gets Okay
By MICHAEL J CONLON
WASHINGTON (UPI) - If
you decide to feed > our bat*
home-prepared food instead
of the commercial variety,
are you taking a chance’
The issue has been subject
to some back and forth for
years, but now a major baby
food manufacturer ha*
provided some clues to the
safety and health question*
as the result of an unusual
legal settlement.
In short the verdict is that
homemade baby food can be
' completely acceptable".
The case began after
consumer groups in
California objected to a
"Dear Mother" letter baker
Heech-Nut Corp sent to
about 760.000 persons in
December, 197b The letter
allegedly contained
disparaging remarks about
homemade baby food
The two parties settled the
matter nut of court, with the
company agreeing to send an
equal number of mothers a
corrective letter to he in-
cluded in a promotional
package it mails out The
original recipients of the
disputed letter, except
possibly those who have had
another child in the interim,
* the new one since
then Idren by now will
have passed the infant food
age
Hie company also agreed
not to say ui its advertising
that there could be a risk of
hactenal contamination or
food poisoning from
homemade baby food
In the interest of shedding
light on the question, here are
the salient parts of the
ReechNut letter
Dear Mother
It appears that a letter we
sent out about a year ago may
have generated some con-
fusion as to our views
regarding homemade ha by
foods Were sorry if we
confused you Beech-Nut
i believes that baby foods
prepared by a parent in the
home are completely ac-
ceptable as long as the parent
exercises reasonable care in
the selection, preparation
and storage of such foods
That's why we suggest
that parents should avoid
feeding very young or sick
infants spinach, carrots and
perhaps beets because these
vegetbles have a high nitrate
content In our previous letter
we mentioned a disease
called methemoglobinemia
which is related to nitrate
content of foods
"Although this disease is
extremely rare, and mainly a
problem for infants not old
enough for solid foods, we are
sure parents will agree that
it's best to avoid a potential
problem no matter how
small, statistically, the
chances of contracting the
disease might be
' Although babies may be
more sensitive to bacteria
than adults, the chances of
food poisoning are remote if
reasonable care is used in
preparing and storing baby
food After all there are
bacteria in the air and on
virtually all feeding utensils,
but they are generally not
disease producing...
"Parents who make baby
foods at home can minimize
the risk of bacterial con-
tamination if they have clean
hands, use clean, freshly
wuhed utensils and cook
food thoroughly. Of course,
care should be taken with
regard to the storage of baby
foods, whether commercial
or home prepared
"May we suggest that in
preparing meals for your
baby or yourself, you use raw
foods that are fresh and cook
them in the smallest possible
amount of water Also, any
food that is not immediately
consumed should be frozen in
air-tight containers and the
storage time for such foods
should be kept at a
minimum...”

Voyager’s Launch, First Day Flawless
PASADENA, Calif. (UPI)
— A "flawless" launch sent
the Voyager 1 spacecraft
hurtling towards Jupiter and
Saturn today and scientists
said there were no problems
such as those that plagued its
sister ship and delayed this
flight for four days.
"Voyager 1 deployed all
booms and turned on various
scientific instruments as
planned and on schedule
without any of the problems
that plagued the Voyager 2,"
a spokesman at the Jet
Propulsion Laboratory said.
The unmanned spacecraft,
carrying 234 pounds of
cameras and scientific
measirtng equipment, rode
into the sky atop a Titan
Centaur rocket that blasted
off from Cape Canaveral,
Fla., at 9:99 am EDT
Monday
"From a spacecraft point
of view, the launch waa ab-
solutely flawless," said John
Casani, Voyager project
manager at Cape Canaveral.
"I'm tickled pink that
things went off Just as I
predicted," added program
manager Rodney Mills.
Scientists were concerned
that the Voy^er l’s boom
carrying cameras and other
scientific gear and a nuclear
generating boom, would not
lock Into place after the
launch — a problem that hit
Voyager 2 after its Aug 20
launch.
But Casani said "the booms
are out and fully deployed
and locked into position "
After the problem was
noticed on Voyager 2.
Voyager l's blastoff was
postponed so that corrective
measires could be taken
Although launched second.
Voyager 1 is expected to
reach Jupiter foir months
before its sister ship - now
nine million miles ahead —
by taking a flatter, mare
direct path.
Voyager 1 entered a 43-
minute parking orfctt 106
milea above earth after the
firing of its two Titan stages
and the first burn of Its
Centaur stage. Hie craft Biot
out of the parking orbit over
Guam with the second
Centaur burn at 9:49 am
Several minutes later.
Voyager 1 fired tta own
propulsion module, which
was later jettuoned. and was
on its way to JiqMter with a
32,411-mile-anhour bunt of
qteed
Both crafts will focus their
scientific instruments at five
of Jupiter's moons, as well as
the planet itself.
