PLAIN CLOTHING RECOMMENDED
BY MOTHERS OF SCHOOLGIRLS
OKLAHOMA CITY Sept 6— That
schoolgirls while in attendance in
school should wear plain gingham
or serge dresses and lisle or woolen
hose and that no silks satlna or
other expensive materials be worn
are recommendations of fifty moth-
ers in a meeting at Hollis the last
week preparatory to the opening of
schools there It was also suggest-
ed that this might apply to the
teachers
Another recommendation was that
girls be not allowed to use' powder
or rogue and parents and friends of
the schools were asked not to have
parties on school nights
These recommendations were pre-
sented to the general meeting of
mothers of school children by a spec-
ial committee composed of Mrs F

USE OF “DOPE”
NOT GltOWlNG DR
LEWIS DECLARES
(Dr A R Lewis State Health Com-
missioner) That a statement recently made by
a police official that ‘‘the sale of
habit-forming drugs and the number
of drug victims Is as great as year
ago is founded on absolute facts”
may be doubted
The Harrison federal law and the
stricter enforcement of state laws
surely have reduced the traffic In
drugs That the nilmber ot drug
addicts la far too large Is unfortu-
nately trUe
The use of cocaine morphine
heroin and all opium derivatives
except under the direction of a qual-
ified physician Is against the law
This is necessary but It has caused
officials of the law and to a certain
extent the general public to regard
drug addicts as crlmintlg and not as
persons suffering from a disease
They are looked upon as persons
who have gone wrong and should be
punished not as persons who should
be cured
It Is however with the community
not a question of fixing the moral
responsibility but a practical ques-
tion ot eliminating the ell
Curative measures have had a con
siderable degree of success along
this line simple punitive methods
have been a failure
We all know that when a drug
addict gets out of funds he or she
will sacrifice anything or anybody
to procure the drug and ht all times
they are dangerous members of the
community
Instead of simply throwing the
drug victim in jail he should be
committed to a municipal hospital
or other Institution there to remain
till discharged if troublesome or
runs away the police to be notified
and he is sent to the penitentiary
Most addicts are willing and an-
xious to be cured from the curse
of the drug that has dragged them
down
Whllo experience has shown that
much better results are obtained by
treating the drug victim as a pa-
tietit jiot as a criminal the boot-
legger of drugs should be prosecut-
ed to the very limit of the law His
enormous profits are deliberately
built up from wrecked lives poor
unfortunates whose craving is 3o
great they will pay any price or com-
mit any crime to obtain the drug
The bobtlegger Is the criminal and
no ldw can he made too stringent to
handle such despicable specimens of
humanity
for the substitute bench if the new
material keeps progressing
All the men are In fine shape
