1 lawns requires long hard work
and patience For those who are
willing to stick by the Job at hand
the information here will be of as-
sistance Weeds of course are an eternal
problem They must be given vigor-
ous battle each succeeding year
Early spring and late fall are the
best times for weed fighting as the
moist conditions then make it more
easy to pull them by the roots
Dig out dandelions at least 1:ra
Inchti below the surface Shallow
cutting ts worso than useless as the
remaining root forms several new
plants
Crab grass Is one of the most
widespread and persistent of the
current grass enemies In late sum-
mer when it is about to seed keep
it cut closely It should be pulled
out by the roots in late summer and
early fall Special raLes can be ob-
taine(I for the purpo:-4e if pulling by
band proves to() laborious
Wlitn the pulling chore Is done
balanced plant food should be up-
plied to the lawn—four pounds to
every 10e) square feet Next wet the
lawn Then apply seed and rake or
roll it in
Crab grass d1e3 in the fall but
drops Eued which germinates the
following spring The practice here
recommended tit should be per-
formed sometime between August
15 and September 15) should give a
good crop of grass in the early
spring so dense and vigorous that
the crab grass seedlings which
germinate comparatively late will
not hove sufficient space or light for
davtlopment
In caring for tho lawn remember
to make additional applications of
plant food periodicaMy where there
are large trees
Water lawns late In the day Do
not sprinkle every day or so but
give one good soaking a week wet-
ting the soil to a depth of several
inches
