"I was on the phone with him and I could
hear the hail," he said. "We discussed the

■ Identifying public shelters
of prime importance
OKLAHOMA COY (AP) — Gov. Frank Keat-
ing has issued an executive order for the state
Office of Civil Management to identify public
storm shelters available in future storms.
“We must make sure that as many people as
possible know the availability and location of
the nearest storm shelter," Keating said. "In
the case of the May 3 tornadoes, the only safe
place to be in the path of the storm was under-
ground."
The twisters earlier this month killed 44
people and damaged or destroyed more than
8,000 homes in central Oklahoma.
Keating issued the order Thursday saying
that “the citizens of Oklahoma need assistance
in tornado preparedness."
Emergency management officials will work
with local governments to plan for tornadoes.
“Civil Emergency Management will also be
working with local media outlets to inform our
citizens of the location of storm shelters and Continued from page 1

said.
The order is to be implemented within 90
days.
State and federal disaster officials also are
warning storm victims not to remove concrete
slab foundations from their properties without
checking whether the slabs need to be re-
moved.
Most slabs were not damaged in the May 3
tornadoes, according to the Federal Emer-
gency Management Agency.
Homeowners should contact their insur-
ance agents, the police or the state Attorney
General’s Office if they are approached by
someone claiming that their slab needs to be
removed. Attorney General Drew Edmondson
said.
“There are no U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
or FEMA representatives making recommen-
dations about slabs.” FEMA spokesman Dan
Walker said.
