DEAR ABBY: This letter is
in response to "Lost in North
Carolina," who has herpes.
I am fortunate to be in a re
lationship with a fine woman
who knows how much she is
worth and brings joy and a
great attitude into my life and
the lives of her children. Yes,
she has herpes. She had it
long before I met her, and I
knew she had it before I asked
her to go out with me. She had
so many of the important
qualities I was looking for in a
woman that it was not an is-
sue.

er precaution. "Lost in North

is life after herpes.

DEAR STEAMED: I would
tell the server that, yes, I
wanted my change. Then I'd
leave a 15 or 20 percent tip,
depending on the service I’d
received. Although in the
past, servers have written to
tell me that the question is
asked to save a trip back to
the table, I consider it to be
presumptuous. Servers
should courteously return
change to the customer as a
matter of course.

live in an old farmhouse and
have beautiful brass door-
knobs. Unfortunately, the
cylinder within the knob itself
became loose and is no longer
functional. Replacing these
knobs is expensive and it
would be criminal to throw
out the knobs. Surely, some-
one repairs such things. I've
tried the local hardware store

me? I am tired of our "throw

DEAR JOAN: Nan’s hus-
band is a builder and he said
the part of the knob you're
looking for is called the mor-
tise box. It's what the cylinder
slides into and it operates the
latch. In our neck of the
woods-, we'd go to Vermont
Salvage, our local salvage
yard, to find mortise boxes for
old doors. You could try a sal-
vage yard. If that doesn't yield
one, you should pick up a
copy of the Old House Jour-
nal, which is available at ma-
jor bookstores (or maybe at
your local library), and see if
you can find a supplier listed
in the magazine. None of our
sources sell mortise boxes
separately. Any other ideas?
