The irrigation canals have well begun to swell with water in transit from Lake Lugert-Altus to the Altus City Reser
voir. Early this morning water was passing under the canal bridge at Tamarack Road nearing the City Reservoir but
had not yet arrived to its final destination. Lugert Altus Irrigation workers at the reservoir this morning said, “It's
coming," and would start pouring into the reservoir in less than a few hours. Water was ordered from Lake-Lugert
Altus on Monday July 15, to help preserve the supply at Lake Tom Steed by blending 90% water from Steed, and 10%
from Lugert. "We plan to use it to further reduce our demand on Steed, to do anything that we can to make the best
use of the water we have," Altus Mayor David Webb said in an interview last week. Still, there is caution to not deplete
100% of the resource at Lugert. "We will take our draw to fill it and then shut it off. We will call for it again when
needed, but it won't be a constant flow," Webb added. The city reservoir may take several days before topping off.
Voters in Jackson County who want to have absentee bal-
lots mailed to them for the Aug. 13 Altus Special Munici-
pal Election should apply now, County Election Board Sec-
retary Jennifer L. Wilson said today. .Although the Count'
Election Board can accept applications for absentee ballot
until 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7, Wilson urged voters
who want to vote by absentee ballot to apply early.
Absentee ballot application forms are available at
the County Election Board office located at 101 X
Main St., room 105. The absentee ballot application
forms also can be downloaded and printed from the
Internet at www.elections.ok.gov
“At least two mail transactions must be made," Wilson
said. “The County Election Board must mail the ballots
to the voter and the voter must return the voted ballots by
mail." Ballots must be received by mail at the County Elec-
tion Board by 7 p.m. on Election Day in order to be counted.
Wilson said that any registered voter may vote by
absentee ballot in any election in which he or she is
