Later this week a piece of Headrick history will probably be gone.
For as long as most people can remember, there has always been
a cotton gin in Headrick.
However the gin was sold recently and workers for the past several
weeks have tearing the structure down.
The Headrick gin stockholders agreed recently to sell the facility to
White Brokerage of Dallas, who in turn sold it to a company in
Argentina according to Charles Abernathy, president of the board.
The transaction was completed approximately three weeks ago
said Abernathy.
Problems with operating the gin began several years ago according
to Abernathy. He said the boll weevil problem forced area farmers
out of the cotton business.
"Everybody quit raising cotton because of the boll weevils," said
Abernathy. "Two years ago we didn't have any dry land cotton come
to the gin and we only had two or three irrigated cotton farmers. " We
just couldn't afford to operate any more."
Abernathy said he talked last week to Tom White of White
Brokerage, the supervisor of the project of tearing down the struc-
ture. > -.ML
“He told me they ought to be finished Tuesday, said Abernathy. "1
don't know of anyone around who can remember when we didn't
have a gin in Headrick."
The latest gin in Headrick was constructed in 1982, according to
Abernathy.
