Simpson and Stewart accepted plea
deals and agreed to testify against
Simpson.
A kidnapping conviction carries the
possibility of life in prison with the pos-
sibility of parole, and a robbery convic-
tion would mean mandatory prison
time.
Cubs 12, Pirates 3
At Pittsburgh, Aramis Ramirez hit a three-run homer
and Chicago improved baseball’s best record.
Two slumping hitters, Jim Edmonds and Kosuke
Fukudome, also had big games as the Cubs moved to SI-
50 — the first time they’ve been 31 games above .500 since
they ended the 1984 season 96-65.
Fukudome, hitting .161 in August when the game began,
drove in four runs. Edmonds had a triple and two doubles
after going Ofor-17 over his previous seven games.
Padres 4, Diamondbacks 2
At San Diego, Jody Gerut hit a two-run homer off Jon
Rauch (4-5) in the ninth inning to snap the Padres’ seven-
game slide. First-place Arizona remained three games
ahead of the Dodgers in the NL West.
Trevor Hoffman (2-6) got the win. Dan Haren and Jake
Peavy both pitched well in an entertaining duel, though
neither got a decision.
Rockies 4, Giants 2
At San Francisco, Jeff Francis (4-8) got his first victory
in more than two months and Yorvit Torrealba homered off
Matt Cain (8-10) to help Colorado win for the eighth time
in 10 games. Brian Fuentes earned his 26th save, ending
the Giants’ season-high five-game winning streak.
Tournament Champions
put him within one of Mickey Mantle on
baseball’s home run chart.
Earlier. Lou Montanez singled in the
tiebreaking run in the 14th inning to give
the Orioles a 4-3 victory in a game halt-
ed in Chicago after II innings on April
28.
Mariners 4, Twins 2.11 innings
At Seattle, Adrian Beltre homered in
the bottom of the 11th inning, and the
Mariners kept Minnesota out of first
place in the AL Central.
With one out in the 11th. Jesse Crain
(5-4) walked Raul Ibanez on a full
count. Then Beltre drilled a low, first-
pitch fastball over the left-field fence to
give Seattle the win. After he rounded
the bases, Beltre was swarmed by team-
mates at home plate.
Athletics 2, Angels 1
At Anaheim, Calif., Dallas Braden
pitched seven masterful innings. Daric
Barton homered and Oakland beat AL
West-leading Los Angeles.
Braden (4-3) allowed a run and seven
hits without recording a strikeout or
walk. Brad Ziegler followed Joey
Devine out of the bullpen and pitched a
hitless ninth inning for his fifth save in
five chances. The rookie right-hander
has allowed only two runs in 45 innings.
Rangers 9, Royals 4
At Kansas City. Mo.. Nelson Cruz
had three hits including a three-run
homer in his season debut, and Texas
beat the Royals.
Cruz, promoted from Triple-A
Oklahoma earlier in the day. homered in
the third with Josh Hamilton and Marlon
Byrd aboard. Cruz hit .342 with 37
home runs at Oklahoma and led the
minors with a .693 slugging percentage.
Last July 28, Cruz was recalled from
the minors and had two homers and five
RBIs at Kansas City in his first game of
the season for Texas.
up showdown
By The Associated Press
The Mets and Phillies, face to face, with first place up
for grabs. And it appears Jimmy Rollins has found his
stroke just in time.
The NL East rivals both won big Monday, setting up
their two-game showdown for the division lead starting
Tuesday night in Philadelphia.
Carlos Delgado hit a pair of three-run homers and Mike
Pelfrey threw his second straight complete game, leading
New York to a 9-1 victory over the Houston Astros at Shea
Stadium.
The Phillies also got an impressive pitching perfor-
mance. Brett Myers extended his shutout streak to 16
innings and Philadelphia finished a four-game sweep of the
visiting Los Angeles Dodgers with a 5-0 win.
Now, after taking turns in first place since the All-Star
break, the Mets and Phillies go toe-to-toe. New York
begins the series up by a half-game.
“It means we have to go get two more,” Rollins, the
scourge of Mets fans, said after a big game Monday night.
“It’s no more important than the four games we have in
Chicago after. Every game is the playoffs right now."
Pedro Martinez is scheduled to start the opener for New
York against 45-year-old Jamie Moyer in the first of five
remaining matchups between the clubs.
Johan Santana goes in Wednesday’s finale against
Philadelphia’s Kyle Kendrick.
Of course, it was the Phillies who charged past the Mets
last September, taking advantage of New York’s massive
collapse to win the division crown.
With revenge on their minds, the Mets have won nine of
13 meetings this season.
In other NL games, it was: Chicago 12. Pittsburgh 3;
San Diego 4, Arizona 2; and Colorado 4, San Francisco 2.
Myers tossed seven gritty innings and Rollins went 3-
for-3 with two RBIs as the Phillies completed their first
four-game sweep of Los Angeles in 23 years. Philadelphia,
which has won eight of 10 since losing four straight at
Dodger Stadium, had never swept Los Angeles in a four-
game series at home.
Rollins broke out of a 4-for-46 slump since calling
Philadelphia fans “front-runners” in a television interview
almost two weeks ago. The 2007 NL MVP tripled, doubled
and reached base five times in his first multihit game since
Aug. 13. He got his first extra-base hits since Aug. 12 and
his first RBIs since Aug.' 11.
He was patient, he had short, quick swings and stayed
on the ball,” manager Charlie Manuel said of his speedy
leadoff hitter.
Coming off his first shutout in four years, Myers (7-10)
allowed nine hits, struck out eight and walked three to help
the Phillies move a season-high 13 games above .500 for
the first time since June 13.
J.C. Romero workeu the eighth and Clay Condrey fin-
ished the 13-hitter. Only two teams have had more hits
without scoring a run in a nine-inning game: The New York
Giants got 14 hits in a 7-0 loss to the Chicago Cubs on
Sept. 14, 1913, and Cleveland had 14 in a 9-0 loss to the
Washington Senators on July 10,1928.
"You draw it up and the law of averages says you’re
going to score some runs, but you can’t depend on that,"
Dodgers manager Joe Torre said.
Chad Billingsley (12-10) gave up three runs and seven
hits in six innings.
At New York, Jose Reyes had a big night at the plate and
Pelfrey came within two outs of his first major league
shutout. The six-hitter followed his first career complete
game, when he allowed three hits in a 6-3 victory over
Atlanta last Wednesday.
With a crowd of 49,791 chanting his name, Pelfrey (13-
8) became the first Mets pitcher with consecutive com-
plete-game wins since Bret Saberhagen in 1995.
“He has tremendous, tremendous confidence right now,”
New York manager Jerry Manuel said. “He’s throwing
some filthy stuff up there right now. 1 mean, absolutely
filthy.”
Delgado’s homer in the first off Brian Moehler (9-5)
barely sneaked over the wall in the left-field corner, but his
drive off Wesley Wright in the seventh cleared the 410-foot
sign in center.
By The Associated Press
Grady Sizemore reached a lofty
plateau, and he might not be finished.
Sizemore hit two home runs and
joined the 30-30 club and Franklin
Gutierrez had a lOth-inning solo shot to
help the Cleveland Indians win their
eighth straight, 4-3 over the Detroit
Tigers on Monday night.
At Detroit, Sizemore homered on the
game's second pitch and became the
14th American League player — the
second from the Indians — to have at
least 30 homers and 30 stolen bases in a
season.
With 32 games remaining. Sizemore
has 31 homers and 34 steals, giving him
an outside chance of becoming the fifth
player ever to reach 40 home runs and
40 stolen bases in the same season.
The Indians, playing out a disappoint-
ing season, have won eight in a row.
Sizemore has been a lone bright spot,
and after hitting No. 30 on the second
pitch of the game, he trotted around the
bases and stepped into the dugout as if it
were no big deal.
“He’s unbelievable." manager Eric
Wedge said of the three-time All-Star.
“You wouldn't know if it was his first or
his 30th. In a low-scoring ballgame, he
set the tone. That's what he does. He
does it from a spot in the order that can
give us a lot of energy."
Meanwhile, the Red Sox were set for
their last visit to Yankee Stadium The
three-game series, starting Tuesday, has
big wild card ramifications. Boston is
currently leading Minnesota in the wild-
card race, and New York is five games
back.
Hank Steinbrenner said he thinks his
Yankees can still put together a late
surge and make the playoffs.
“If we put on a run here, there’s no
question we can make it.” Steinbrenner,
a Yankees' co-chairman, said Monday
night at the team's spring training com-
plex in Tampa, Fla. “There’s no question
with the number of games we have left,
it's possible.”
The Indians are a full 12 games
behind Boston and are essentially out of
the playoff chase. Not that Sizemore is
to blame.
Sizemore became the first AL player
to join the 30-30 club since Alfonso
Soriano did it for Texas in 2005. Joe
Carter is the only other Indians player to
accomplish the feat, in 1987.
“It’s exciting when we’re playing
well like we are," Sizemore said. “We’re
finding ways to win right now and that’s
what you want.”
With nine more home runs and six
more steals, he’d join Jose Canseco
(1988), Barry Bonds (1996), Alex
Rodriguez (1998) and Soriano (2006) as
the only players in baseball history to
reach the 40-40 plateau.
Gutierrez, who singled in the game-
winning run in the ninth inning of
Sunday's victory at Texas, hit the second
pitch thrown by reliever Gary Glover (1-
3) into the left-field stands to break a 3-
3 tie.
“That's the first time that’s happened
to me," Gutierrez said of the consecutive
game-winning hits. “I’ve been having
some good games in the late innings.”
Glover regretted the throw.
"I tried to run it in on him. but he got
a good swing,” he said. “It wasn’t the
best pitch to throw at that time.”
Orioles 4. White Sox 3, 14 innings,
end of suspended game
White Sox 4, Orioles 3
At Baltimore, Jim Thome hit his
535th home run to gain sole possession
of 15th place on the career list, and
Chicago beat Baltimore after losing the
completion of a game suspended by
rain.
Thome's 28th homer of the season
gave the White Sox a 4-3 lead in the
sixth. The drive, off Baltimore rookie
Chris Waters (2-1). moved Chicago’s
designated hitter past Jimmie Foxx and
actor and advertising pitchman who was
acquitted in 1995 of charges that he
murdered his ex-wife and her friend.
A hearing date on the fair trial issue
has not been set. Stewart lawyer Robert
Lucherini said he also would appeal the
decision to not delay the trial. The trial
is expected to last at least five weeks.
Stewart and Simpson face felony
charges of kidnapping, armed robbery
and assault with a deadly weapon stem-
ming from a confrontation with two
