ALTUS AFB — Just one week
after he captured the Altus Air
Force Base wage grade em-
ployee of the year award. Ernest
L. Grimes was named Air

Command’s outstanding main-
tenance personnel, civil service
supervisor/manager category.
"When I first earned the
award at base level I figured it
would end there," said Grimes,

evaluator. "I had no idea I would
win at command level."
Grimes' package has now
been sent to Air Force level
where he'll compete against
other command-level winners
for the top spot in the Air Force.
"I hope my chances are good
(at Air Force level)," Grimes said.
"I've been nominated for the
award before, but base level is
as far as it’s gone. (At Air Force
level) I'll be competing against
some pretty good people."
Grimes said he feels the fact
that he enjoys his job so much is
a big reason he earned the
command level recognition.
"My job’s great. I've been the
PMEL quality process evaluator
going on 19 years, and I've been
working in other aspects of the
lab, all total, 34 years. It's been
good to me."
Several of Grimes' significant
accomplishments throughout
the year include:
— Grimes trained 12 person-
nel on the quality philosophy,
which formed a foundation for
continuous process improve-
ment.
— He used in-process reviews
to collect data needed to im-
prove key processes and ser-
vices in the PMEL
— He briefed the flight weekly
on nonconformities identified
by equipment and process
quality reviews.
— Grimes created flowcharts
and quality process measure-
ments for tasks related to qual-
ity evaluator duties.
— He assisted the base
