Senior Day at Altus Junior
College is an annual event held
for the purpose of better
acquainting seniors in the area
with the campus.

During the supper the students
were entertained by the student
entertainers, the stage band,
and the Hillbilly Quartet which
included Stan Orr, Lonnie
Bevers, Mike Johnson, and
Larry Floyd.
There was a dance held in the
rotary center with Black River
Circus.
Ms. Susan Pettit was recently
elected president of the
Oklahoma Journalism
Education Association. This
association is an organization

Lindsey Stevenson and Jimmy
Robinson.

teacher working with Ms. Susan

here and surrounding towns.
They were then issued name
tags. Red ones were issued to
visiting students and green ones
were issued to college students
and faculty.
Dr. W.C. Burris, President of
AJC, Dean Cecil Chesser, Mr.
Richard Anglan counselor.
Mason Dickerson and Lonnie
Bevers, President of AJC
student senate spoke to the high
school students.
They told of the advantages
area students would have if they
attended AJC. They also
discussed the history and future
plans of the new campus which
is to be constructed north of
town.
The AJC faculty was then
introduced and the students
were divided into groups of
about twenty.
A student of AJC took the
group on a tour of the campus
and gave them some in-
formation on the classes.
The tour began in the
auditorium and the students
were shown the classrooms,
financial aid office, health of-
fice, counselors office, science
building, library, and art
building where they saw the art
work of the students.
They were then taken back to
the student center and served a
spaghetti supper.
curriculum, up-grade teacher
education in journalism and
make arrangements for the
state meeting next year are just
a few of Ms. Pettit’s respon-
sibilities as the president.
Ms. Pettit has taught at Altus
High the last five years and this
is her fourth year as COLLAR
and Bulldog yearbook advisor.
At Central State University,
she was the editor of the college
paper, THE VISTA and worked
two years in the public relations
office.
Ms. Pettit holds a bachelor of
science degree in language arts
from the Universtiy of
Oklahoma. While attending
O.U., she worked on the
OKLAHOMA DAILY and in the
public relation office.
Under Ms. Pettit’s guidance in
cooperation with Mr. Bob
Gilmore, publisher, the school
paper, THE COLLAR, has
become a weekly newspaper
covering student affairs at Altus
High School. The paper is very
unique in that it is delivered with
THE ALTUS-TIMES
DEMOCRAT, and it is given to
the school by the ATD as a public
service. Students enrolled in
journalism are even able to use
the composing room at the ATD
to do the actual work on the
layout.
