Dan Mc Dole the young man
with the nice smile in the county
clerk's ' office disclaims hobbies
but his fellow-workers say "
so" "McDole's hobby is girls"
they declare'"und he doesn't cure
what color so long as they're
blonde"
Miss Wilma Green also an at-
tache of the clerk's office is an-
other former Cushing resident
She was absent on the occasion of
ray visit but the rest of the force
declared "Wihna's been here four
years and she's practically accli-
mated now Also she has a large
collection of stuffed animals If
you want to be her friend send
her something stuffed Dear dear
—that's a terrible suggestion to
make at the turkey season isn't
It? After tomorrow maybe I can
Just take myself"
"Well now" interrupts Mrs
Houston "if you're going to Itit
hobbles don't forget Dale—he col-
lects stamps and he really likes
rare- ones"
John Howard three and orte-
half years on the clerk's force has
the best hobby of them all "Just
my wife and two kids I guess" he
remarks without even stopping to
think
M RS DORCAS RANSOM the
petite lady who checks rec-
ords for you at the court clerk's
office doesn't look like a pioneer
at all She looks much too young
to have seen 20 years of service
at the courthouse of Stillwater
but she says she has She also
claims the young lady whom you
sometimes see in her company is
! not her sister but her daughter
"Intermitten service that is"
explains Mrs Ransom "I have
been away from the work at in
tervals I spent those intervals in
getting married— in having a
v in various ways but
in the end I seem to come back
to the courthouse like a homing
pigeon"
And from the affectionate tone
that many of her fellow-courthouse
employees use in referring
to -Dorcas" it is evident that they
feel the old courthouse wouldn't
be homelike without her
J H BLANKENSHIP was work-
ing industriously over big sets
of books yesterday getting every-
thing in readiness for the tax
rolls for next year But he always
has time to paw and ask about
'Cushing folks and Cushing hap
penings The reason for the rush
in the county assessor's office just
now is that they hope to get the
skeleton tax roll completed before
time to start taking assessments
:Jan 2 On that date barring im-
passable roads Blankenship will
' be at the City Hall ready to assess
Cushing
Miss Helen Tansey in the coon-
Jy assessor's office may not be
quite as much of a pioneer as
some courthouse employes but she
merely order that the sum of
$5000 be paid in the regular in-
stallments of $50 per month That
will extend over eight years and
by that time her condition may
have progressed to a point where
some other disposition will have I
to be made By that time too
these girls will be out of school
and their future provided for"

has seen a dozen years of service

Payne county mighty thoroughly
BILL NEWELL court clerk be-
ing a single man and unsus-
ceptible to the domination of wo-
men seemed to have his office
force on the Jump For all his good
nature we suspect that man of
being a slave-driver on efficiency
It was hard for Mrs Helen Street
and I to snatch time to catch up
on the Cushing gossip but we
managed rather well during
periods when he was in court
Helen Street is known' in Still-
water as in Cushing as one of
the loyal dependatbie pillars of
that geneious civic-minded grouP
—the Business and Professional
Women's club She is another one
that always finds time to do a
special favor for Cushing people
SPEAKING of pioneers here's
two courthouse Rock of Gibral-
tars we mustn't forget Paul Far-
rington county engineer has been
on the job checking roads and
materials and buildings and what
not for all of 13 or 14 years
And then there's W H Sollers
If Sollers ever gets time he ought
to write a book Nobody has writ-
ten yet the day to day yarn of
"Read the Question Please" but
It has limitless possibilities The
alert swift-moving man' of the
pothooks who transcribes word
for word everything uttered in a
courtroom but speaks only when
the command comes "Read the
Question Please" has plenty to
tell
W H So Hers remembers the
ci ucial points of every important
case winch has been tried in
Payne county for the past 20
years He has silently weighed the
evidence and written his own
opinion of what the final jury
verdict would be in most of the
important cases And in only a
few of the cases has he missed
Hope you get time to write that
book Mr Sollers Kindly advance
order me two copies—one for my-
self and one for a life-long friend
who also spent 20 years as a court
stenographer
Now this isn't complete cover-
age of the Payne county
courthouse—not by any means
We aren't saying much about the
county attorneys office because
the county attorney and his as-
sistant seem to get more publicity
than most county officials any-
way We did take time to ask what
number was drawn by Bill Berry
the new assistant Bill looks
mighty eligible girls but it also
looks as if the draft might get to
him first His number is 1204 His
boss Dave Hervey is married but
not too sure that he won't have
to do some defense service too
since he's a naval reserve man
I He says he is ready but he rather
hopes they let him help wear
some of the new off his newly
built and occupied house before
going back to tramp the decks of
