Ronny shrugged deprecatingly
"There's no use mooning over spilt
love"
"Still we needn't base been so
abrupt about things We might
have held a bit of a farewell party
Just you and I—"
nanny was matter-of-fact "Above
all things let's avoid mawkishness
Now that we've decided on our
course celerity should be the
watchword Curtail the agony you
know This brings me back to
what I was going to say when you
began to argue--"
"Ronny Forbes I never arrne!"
"—that" calmly "the sooner I
reach Mianesota and establish res
idence Ina sooner you will be free
to fly honorably to the strong
refuge of Abner's arms the safe
haven of his manly bosom"
nanny's :nee wos perfectly
straight and Joan saarebed it in
vain for signs that lie was making
ganici of her
"You seem 't o ne In a desperate
hurry to get ircel"
nanny's face reflected his'aston
ishment "Wto I thought it was
You who wanted the nasty thina
over with na soon ta possible?"
"I do but—yet o: coursa I do!" i
The uncertain eaality la Joan'a
voice and taanar
denly' In lie stoa t' there came ths
decisive crirpoesa or the Joan
whom Raney knew beet The da
tient Joan Forlss!
That ended that
And so Ranay went away
No sooner Ird he gone then
things been ta happen Little
buzzes in tha beginning—thunder-
claps before long
It started who Joan muldenla
remembered that nanny had not
mentioned any temporary hotel ade
dress to which he wonted his mail
sent In fact now that she was rta
minded along that neoro he bad
not even declared that he wonla
ever write to her after he got sea
tied to give his address
Perhaps he had thought s'as
could find it out from Stivner if slit
were anxious to know it
Still be might have been more
thoughtful That was Ronny
though: HER nanny Thought
less and carefree as a boy
She fished casually with he
maid knowing that the girl hai
been "keeping company" with Rea
nY'e valet An nnderstairs
mance that had been diverting ta
her and nanny before—well be
fore they had ceased to be sensa
tive to the romantic things of life
nanny had taken his valet wit
him of course—a Hungarian who
had been in his employ for a don
years and was as essential in Ran
ny's richly ordered scheme ot
as a collar button
"Mimi" probed Joan "of anurse
you're going to write to Tarn° in
Minnesota?"
"Meeneesota Madma? That eels
not th' name he give me Eet ees
how you say eet Falaylmel"
"IDAHO!" Joan gasped "Why
you must be mistaken Mr Forbes
said they were going to—"
Joan checked haraelf She POT1111
not diecuss the authenticity of Ron
ny's information with her mob) of
course So she just stared at the
girl—stared and stared and pen
dered!
Then if that were not mystify'
ing enough an encounter with Mrs
Teffens that afternoon at a meet
ing of the Park Avenue Women'r
Committee on Penny Lunches fot
Poor Picknickers of which boll
were leading lights shot her high
er into the air —
Mrs Teffens took tne very first
opportunity to get Joan aside wigh
malicious cordiality and frir p tn
ness and gab: "My dear cengrata
lotions I've heard the ?DIN? k
Everyone has nanny has gone to
Nevada to get a divorce"
"NEVADA?"
"Why yes of course" gigglinn
"Proud creature don't look se mien
as though you're getting NEWS
nanny has told it all around" Mrr
Teffens grew very confidential "Of
course be did warn everyone not
to tell his wife WHERE be was go
Mg but we thought—"
"You thought correctly my dear
Mrs Teflon& Just one of nanny a
little pleasantries Droll lad Ex)
fly!"
"Nevertheless" sniffed Mrs Tet
fens to another friend as Jove
walked away "something tellsae
nanny Forbes did NOT tell hie
wife where he was going! I be
Rove be was In earnest for once I(
his life!"
"I wonder" raged Joan inwara
ly "why he doesn't want me 't
know the truth as to where he has
gone? What is he trying to 011
over on me with all this idlotit
'don't tell the wife' nonsense?"
The "worst" following Imre&
mortal precedent was yet to come
The telephone rang that evenir g
while Joan was dressing to go wita
Abner to the Opera opening
peremptory jangling carried as
strange a forewarning of troulAI
that Joan knew it was had nolrl
even before she took the planal

jog:
