Old Timer's
Column
by Mi F M Man
The old timers thought little of
it Olen they lived miles apart if
they came home and learned
some one had been in their house
cooking and eating during their
absence They didn't turn people
away hungry k hen they IA ere at
home and Melt traveling over the
country thought nothing of spend-
ing the night in some bachelors
dugout and cooking themselves
something whether or not he was
at home Now if we came home
and sonic one had been in the
house helping themselves we
would probably call the kVA'
Sometimes a neighbor would
come borrowing when no one was
at home and kvould take vhit
came for and use it and bring it
back This didn't seem to matter'
to my father so long as they
brought it home promptly but the
thing that always provoked him
was for a neighbor to borrow
something and turn around and
lend it to someone else without
either of them having his per-
mission to do so and no one knew
where it was
There was considerable borrow-
ing went on among the old timers
because of long distances that had
to be traveled to the railroad for
supplies and the most of them
were fairly prompt about return-
ing what they borrowed
A man named Ballard lived on
the Palo Duro creek had a good
wagon and didn't mind loaning it
a reasonable amount but did like
to have it once in a while him-
self Ile hid a friend who's name
was Sam living several miles
away and he was a professional
borrower
lbs wagon was old and it was
a common saying among his
neighbors that it wouldn't hold
shucks Every time he wanted to
haul any thing he would borrow
Mr Bollards wagon and keep it
until he went after it
This got to be quite a chore to
have to go several miles after his
wagon before he could haul any-
thing One day Sam came for it alol
Mr Ballard told him the last time
it came home he cut a switch and
gave it a good switching and told
it he vitanted it to stay home
We heard they weren't such
close friends afterward which may
have had its advantages to Mr
Ballard in the long run

Is DISCUSSED
Ili MEETING
Cuymon's City Planning Com-
mission presented the proposal to
make the city's Sunset park into
a state function during a special
discussion session held Wednes-
day night with the City Council
at city hall
No formal action has been tak-
en on the proposal as yet Mayor
Fra!ui M illee Said Thursday
with se-veral VCrIIIPS of the pro-
ject still under consideration and
further invesligation
Fortified with resohttions adopt-
ed by more than a dozen civic or-
ganizations the eommIttee re-
commended that the ownership of
the City Section be transferred to
the stat with an immediate lease-
back to the city
NO Control Lost
No control of the operation
wolild 1)4' lost through that proce-
dure the Commission pointed out
yet it would pave the way for the
State Planning and Resolirces
Board to come in and help with
funds needed to develop the sec-
tion as a recreational area pro-
perly Senator Leon B Field Tex-
homa and Rep Frank Ogden
Guymon were both in attendance
at the meeting to explain the
state's stand On the project
The state beard is ready will-
ing and able to make Sunset park
into Suset State Park once the
legal procedures are worked out
they reported
As the situation now stands no
state fmnis can be cjianded on
the proierty including the $5009
appropriation approveli at the last
session of tlc legislature
Lengthy Discussion
According to the resolution sign-
ed by most civic bodies the trans
fer of title would bring about an
immediate lease back to the city
for a term of 99 years Control
of all present facilities was reserv-
ed for the interested organizations
such as the school airport board
golf board and fair board
Clubs with projects at the lake
recreational area would also be
granted continued control
