GRANITE GREER COUNTY OKLA
I you WON'T ENJOY THIS
-BUT READ IT
By Bill Wingo
For years now writers have tried
to put across to the general public
the horror and seriousness of car
wrecks—trying to make the people
realize their responsibilities when
they drive a car And still people
are killed and maimed every day on
cur highways
Now I know I am not a journal-
ist of any great degree but if you
will bear with me I would like to
tell you what a car wreck is—from
first hand knowledge Five of my
family were lucky enough to come
through one alive how we will
never know except by Divine Per-
mission Our car and the car that
hit us were both completely de-
molished One minute you are driving down
the highway at 55 miles per hour
with the three kids in the back
seat playing and your wife and
you in the front seat talking and
listening to the radio minding
your own business and on your side
of the road—then it happens
You see a car meeting you sud-
denly go out of control cross the
center line and head straight at
you You are helpless knowing you
are going to be hit and there is
nothing you can do about it You
go to the right trying to get out
of the way and in less time than
it takes V) snap your fingers you
hear the crash of metal and glass
and you know you are rolling over
and over and you have only one
thought in your mind—"It's got to
stop in a minute it's got to stop
In ft rninute" I 4 ft' MI
You hear the kids screaming and
you can't help them you smell dust
and blood and shattered glass and
hot metal you are bouncing around
1
getting cuts and bruises and broken
: bones and then it stops as suddenly
as it started
You crawl out of an upqide
down car through a partially opened
door and all you can think of is
"I've got to get them out of there
I've got to get them out of there"
You see your nine-year-old daugh-
ter face down and not moving with
blood spurting out of the back of
her head you pick her up and
carry her a short distance and let
her down easy by a rock under a -
weed the only shade you can see
As you turn her over you see
blood spurting out of her mouth
and she is limp You suppose the
worst has happened and you want
to stay with her but you hear two 1
more children and your wife scream-
ing for help and you tell yourself
again "I've got to get them out of
there" And you do (
You get another one out and (
another one and then help your
vvife get out You Thank God they E
are still conscious even though you t
see blood coming from their mouths N
and feet and legs and arms
By then you have' a few helpers
who have stopped You ask for an 11
ambulance and someone volunteers
to go call one Then you wait for I
what seems hours before it gets
there A long ride to the h6spital
and then anxious moments while t:
emergency treatment and examina- h
tions are made Then and then only tl
are you informed "No critical in- fl
juries" Jr
You see the driver of the other ti
ear again at the hospital and the c
Highway Patrol Trooper—but you
are not mad at anyone You are NI
humble because you have been told t(
your family will be all right even c
though one will be kept overnight a
fcr observation
Then and then only you find out
vou have two broken ribs and a ti
lacerated knee You let yourself
down and feel the pain — but it
doesn't hurt—you are too thankful N
Think of this the next time you
are en the highway—and be care- 1-
rill We elon't want anyone to go
through what we did
tnrougn wnat we ma
It's too horrible—words can't de-
scribe it

At regular meeting of the Town
Board of Trustees Monday night
July 21 it was unanimously voted
to discontinui- immediately the 10
percent 'discount on city bills This
discount has been given in the past
to those who paid their bills by the
tenth of the month This has been
changed
On the next city bills all cus–
tomers will pay the full amount
because there will be no discount
A nd—
It you fail to pay your bills on
or before the tenth of the month
a ten percent penalty will be added
to the full amount
This is all brought about by the
Increase of cost in upkeep anti
supplies For instance the cost of
electricity has increased 35 percent
This called either for an Increase
ita rates or abolishing the discount
with the trustees choosing the lat-
ter Also at the meeting it was voted
to raise from 50c to $100 the
charge or maintenance of outdoor
tellets This effects about seven
customers who have outdoor toilets
The former charge of 50c per
month wa$ raised to 100
