application has been sent in. The Genealogical Society has
paid the fee of 13 per year which entitles the patrons of the
Altus Public Library to the following services;
—The right to borrow any of the almost complete
collection of U.S. census records from 1790 to 1880 and 233
reels of volumes of books on microfilm.
One year’s subscription to "The Southwestern
Genealogist,” a bi-monthly newsletter devoted to prac-
tical research with a large section for patron's free
queries, ads and notices and listing new library
aquisitions.
A catalog, fully indexed, of all the genealogical and
historical books and manuscripts on microfilm in the
Southwestern Genealogical Library
Genealogical questions will be answered by the
library staff when accompanied by a self-addressed,
stamped envelope.
The local Genealogical Society has also ordered a copy
of "Federal Population Census, 1790-1890" from the
National Archives. This book will be placed in the library
to be used, along with the catalog, to assist you in deter-
mining which reel contains the census of the county in
which you are interested. Some of us felt it was worth the
$1 this book cost to have a copy in our own library. If you
would like the publication numtier and the address give
me a call
Now- tins is how you use the microfilm library. The
Altus Public Library will have order forms, catalog and
the newletter to help you decide which reel you want. They
must be ordered by number There is a charge of $1 per
reel plus 40 cents for postage and insurance both ways.
The film must be left in the library and read only on the
library microfilm reader. The film may be kept in the
library two weeks so when you have finished reading it
spread the word around so that others may read it while it
is here. Since many of us are interested in the same
counties, you may want to share the expense of several
reels with a friend.

----Polly's Problem--------------
DEAR POLLY — I have kept house for several
years and have a problem that surely others have had.
How does one get undershirts and white socks really
clean and white without using harsh methods’’ -
MRS C.W.M
MISS YOUR
PAPER?
Ne hope not. But if it
happens, please call
482-1221.
Our service center is
open from 5:30 p.m.
It is very frustrating to me to pick up the paper on
Tuesday and find a mistake in the column, knowing that it
will be a whole week before I can correct it. If it is just a
wrong word or a misspelled word I try to blame it on
someone at the newspaper office if, after checking my
carbon copy, the error is still there I turn to my old
typewriter It gives me a chance to point out to my
husband that my writing would be much better if I had a
new electric typewriter Mine is electric but it must be
bolted to the desk to keep it from jumping off when I
return the carriage. However, I must take full respon-
sibility for last week's mistake I have bought several
copies of The Sandlappers" so I knew, very well, the
price was $2.75 but I distinctly remember typing $2 so to
those of you who may have tried to buy a copy for that
price-sorry.
Speaking of errors, I may never use the word "vir-
tually again since it came out "virtously" the last time I
used it. That was really my ty pewriter’s fault because I do
know the difference in the meaning of the two words.
Now to the subject of the day. Another important in-
formation source has been made available to area
genealogists. I have told you how important the census
records are to genealogical research, but until now, it has
been necessary to go to the Oklahoma City Library to read
the census or order copies from the Archives in
Washington, D.C.
Now through the efforts of the Western Trails
Genealogical Society, it is possible for anyone in the area
to rent microfilm. Some weeks ago, members of the
Genealogical Society voted to become a patron of the
Southwestern Genealogical Library in El Paso, Tex. This
library is a member of the Texas State Library System, a
non-profit corporation, self-sustaining, with no public
funds and it serves patrons wherever they are located
through mail-order service This is a new concept in
library operations and an invaluable tool to researchers
everywhere, especially those who have no other access to
genealogical records
In discussing this project, members decided that if the
library board and staff agreed, more people would benefit
from this microfilm rental source if the film were ob-
tained through the Altus Public Library. These contacts
have now been made, the board has approved and the
This is an important step toward building the
genealogical section of our library. I hope you will make
use of it.
