Done in several sessions, root
canals are gentle procedures,
Lenkowsky said in a telephone inter-
view.
In a survey of 1,000 people, Opinion
Research Corp, found that people
who had actually had root canals
were four to five times more likely
than other people to describe the ex-
perience as painless.
“If you push it into one i session),
you're looking for more problems -
sleepless nights, more swelling,"
Lenkowsky said. “When the patients
get out of the chair, they don’t know
which end is up.
"That’s the kind of treatment that
creates those kinds of (horror)

Church Women United will join
state and local units across the na-
tion in May Fellowship Day on May
3.
May Fellowship Day brings Chris-
tian women from many traditions
together in an ecumenical worship
experience to address their social
concerns. This year’s theme, "Our
Piece of the Action,” challenges
church women traditionally involved
in caring for victims of social ine-
quities to deal with root causes and
become directly involved in action
that brings about social change.
Church Women United has a long
history of addressing the causes of
social injustice and taking part in the
political process to accomplish their
goals of empowerment of women,
economic justice, human rights and
peace.
It is a national movement and the
catalyst that brings Protestant,
Roman Catholic, Orthodox women
together into one “community of car-
ing."
Representing a broad spectrum of
religious tradition, race, age,
economic status and ethnic
background, these church women
work ecumenically through a na-
tional unit, 50 state units including
one in the District of Columbia and
1800 local units.
Church Women of Altus are asked
to attend Fellowship Day May 3 at
noon for lunch and a program featur-
ing June Bailey as the speaker.
The program will be presented by
the women of Grace United
Methodist and Our Savior I .utheran
Churches. The Prince of Peace
Catholic Church will be the host
church and will provide the lunch
that will be served at 11:45. A
nursery will also be provided.
The campaign will continue
through Thursday night.
Owen is a graduate of Oklahoma
Christian College and of the Harding
Graduate School of Religion. He
served as minister of the Paradise
Street Church of Christ in Vernon,
Texas before moving to Denver in
1979.
His lessons during the campaign
will focus on the theme of “Jesus Is
Lord." They will stress the sur-
render of our lives to the rule and
reign of Jesus. He uses freely effec-
tive visuals to enhance his lessons.
The campaign will start Sunday
morning with Owen speaking to all
adult and youth classes in the main
auditorium at 9:30 a.m. “I Must
Obey Because Jesus Is Lord" will be
the sermon topic at the regular Sun-
day morning worship service at 10:25
a.m.
The Sunday night service will be
moved from the regular 6 p.m. time
to 7:30 p.m. for the series. Owen’s
topic will be “Jesus Rules As Lord
Through The Word."
"How We Got The Bible" will be
the topic of the 30-minute noon day

Root canals are done to teeth in
which the pulp - soft, nerve-filled
tissue - has become infected.
Because the pus that forms is locked
in by layers of hard tooth, the abcess
spreads downward and puts pressure
on surrounding tooth and bone. Imp-
inged upon, bone can recede so that
the tooth loosens, explained Dr. An-
drew F. Kaplan, coordinator of den-
tal services at Mount Sinai.
Boring in through the top of the
tooth (or through a cavity is there’s
one deep enough), the dentist
scrapes away all this pulp, taking
with it the nerves that sense hot, cold
and pain. The now empty channels
are widened, cleaned and dried, then
