Ladies and Gentlemen, let us con-
sider the “superstar,” in all of
his/her glory. If you use Diana Ross
and Julio Iglesias as examples, you
begin to see their superstardom
obscuring the reason it developed in
the first place-musical talent. Diana
and Julio have gotten together for
one song, “All of You,” and each
singer has released a new album.
American fame for Iglesias was a
carefully engineered thing. His
brilliant management team started a
publicity campaign that worked:
they convinced music lovers here
that Julio was made for them. On his
new album, 1100 Bel Air Place, he
glistens with the kind of artificial
charm that will draw people to the
fold in swarms.
In addition to the duet with Diana
Ross; Julio sings with Willie Nelson
and the Beach Boys “The Air That I
Breathe," the song with the Beach
Boys, uses them as a background
choir. They get lost in the echo
chamber production that Iglesias ob-
viously favors, since it is used
throughout the album. Everything
about 1100 Bel Air Place has the Julio
trademark sound, just like the of-
ficial “J.I." logo that has appeared
on all official Iglesias products.
Diana Ross has built up her own
veneer of superstardom by such ac-
tions as becoming incorporated
(Diana Ross Enterprises, Inc ). The
difference between her and Julio,
though, is pointed out by the lively
new Ross album, Swept Away.
Where Julio’s charm is built up with
layers of production techniques,
Diana has a genuine appeal that
rests on the music she performs.
Among the many fine tunes on
Swept Away is “Missing You,” a
beautiful ballad that was written and
produced by Lionel Richie specifical-
ly for Ross. (It has nothing to do with
the current John Waite hit song of the
same name ) Nearly all of the songs
are equally well written and per
formed. Diana Ross definitely hasn't
let stardom go to her head.
