Cooperative extension work is
being used more and more by ur
ban and suburban families Last
year extension workers assisted
some 4)2 million nonfarm fam
ilies in solving their problems
Tne nonfarm demand for exten
tion assistance is accelerated by
the postwar trend toward more
home ownership and do-it-yourself
Interest is especially high
on such topics as homemaking
gardening landscaping insect
control and food preparation
and processing
Since food constitutes a major
family expenditure consumers
need adequate unbiased infor-
mation on which to base their de-
cisions on the selection of food
Trained extension workers in
most maj or cities gather informa-
tion from various sources of food
supply quality selection care
services processing and distri-
bution which they interpret and
pass on to consumers
These consumer marketing pro-
grams are particularly important
today with consumers facing the
choice of selecting the best buy
from literally thousands of pro
ducts The food field continually
oilers new products new forms of
old products and new services
thus adding to the choices con
sumers must make
These many services of the U
S Department of Agriculture
help farmers processors dis-
tributors and consumers of farm
products alike to maintain a
steady flow ot food and fiber
from farm to home in the best
possible condition and at the low-
est cost per unit
