Floyd Gass told his players
they had better quit gloating

Kansas State.
The original proposal — the one that failed —
called for the 20 largest schools (ADA) to form 4A,
the next 32 to be 3A, the next 64 2A, the next 80
Class A, and all remaining schools Class B.
The New Deal theoretically will not bother the
structure of the Boomer Conference, Lawton High,
Eisenhower, Norman, Del City, Moore and Duncan
fall into the top 24 ADA.
Ardmore ranks 30th in the list and may choose
to take the 3A route. However, Ardmore petitioned
to join the Boomer in the past and could do so
again.
It is not clear if the New Deal permits petition-
ing into a higher class. We assume that it does.
Believe it or not, the mail vote was conducted
after several administrators complained they were
getting a raw deal. The rumor is that these lead-
ers wanted the original reclassification to pass,
and they were unhappy when it didn’t.

THERE IS reason to believe that selfish motives
prompted these outbursts. Most of the complainers
were situated near the bottom of the old classes,
and the reclassification would have boosted them
near the top under the new ADA proposal.
If this is the case, it stands to reason that new
objections may be rasied. Ada, for instance, may
not like being 33rd in Class AAA when it could
have been fourth in AA.
And Marlow, our neighbor city that almost
wound up third in Class A, now finds itself 55th
among the 46 Class AA schools.
We realize that someone is going to be unhappy,
no matter how the situation turns out. But it hard-
ly seems fair for a few dissidents to be able to
dictate policy to the state’s governing board.
For what it’s worth, Oklahoma now has roughly
the same classification as does Texas. Do you sup-
pose this numerical equality would help Del City
if it played Austin Reagan?

A little persistence often brings results.
* A few weeks ago the Oklahoma Secondary
School Activities Association tried to reclassify its
member schools. The proposal for basketball,
baseball, track and wrestling passed, but the foot-
ball change was vetoed.
This defeat came as a shock to OSSAA leaders,
who are not accustomed to having their ideas over-
ruled. Rather than admit defeat, the reclassifica-
tion proposal was altered slightly. The new idea
was submitted to member-schools for a mail vote.
To the surprise of exactly no one, the new pro-
posal passed.
Beginning next year, the 24 schools with the
most average daily attendance (ADA) will be
Class 4A. The next 40 schools will form Class 3A,
and the next 56 will be 2A, and the following 72
