Rescued Prisoners
Of Death Yacht Tell
of Slaying Pirate
Adventurer Made Wife Stand Guard Over Other
Passengers With Gun After He Had
Shot Skipper to Death
By United Press
LOS ANGELES Cal Dec 31—Federal agents ques-
tioned the six survivors of the last cruise of the little yacht
Aalje today to get to the bottom of one of the strangest
stories that ever came from the sea—a murderous mutiny
4
that interrupted a placid holiday
It was the story of an adventurer who decided to turn
pirate who chartered a boat killed the skipper imprisoned
the passengers and headed into the South Seas lie ruled the
boat with his gun until one of the men aboard sneaked up
behind him and brought him down with a marlin spike
Then they tossed him overboard
As a sequel the six survivors—two men three women and a child—
were left adrift in a boat they could not handle with food and water
nearly gone no radio to summon aid and their only salvation being the
0 chance passing of some ship or plane
Distress Sign on Sail Seen From Air
A naval flier on patrol saw them noticed the huge SOS scrawled
ton a sail and notified the Coast Guard The Coast Guard cutter
i Perseus towed the yacht into the harbor last night and the Department
of Justice took command
The Aalje belonged to Dwight Paulding a Santa Barbara hotel
owner and sportsman It was chartered for the trip by Jack Morgan
4 the man who shot Paulding and took command
Morgan's wife an expectant mother was one of the passengers
Her nurse Miss Elsie Berdan was another Paulding's friend Mrs
Gertrude Turner and her son Robert 8 also were aboard The other
two were George Sternack a guest and Robert Horne a photographer
who often accompanied Paulding on yacht trips
It had been Morgan's plan since he had no money to steal his
provisions at ports that he passed or take them by force as the occa-
Mons arose federal men believed
Able to Give Impression of Wealth
Apparently he was making for some South Sea island where his
wife could give birth to their child with the nurse in attendance No
one knew what was in his mind except Morgan himself however and
he was thrown into the sea either unconscious or dead for his mutiny
