The latter part of January has been
designated for the annual chamber
of commerce "revival" The subscrip-
tions for the support of its activities
could be maintained by the simple
route of making them automatically
continuous until terminated by resig-
nation This is not done because of
I the good psychological effect of hav-
ing periods of accountability when
the chamber comes back to the peo-

The board of directors of the chain
' ber or commerce has decided to con-
tinue for another Ks the °per shop
division as a unit -of that organiza-
tion We accept that decision as fixing
the policy for the ensuing year There
are too many other important things
i ' pending which can only be handled
! by a chamber of commerce to fall out
with that organization over Its atti-
tude on one question One robin does
pI
I not make a spring -nor one activity
a chamber of commerce However we
In no sense recede from our position
that the chamber of cammerce is a
place to meet on eommen ground for
the promotion of civic activities which
artfor the comtlion good Differences
on religion politics and economics
ii4 should have no part In Its program
Is It will be a year before we again agi-
tate this subject There is no use
Of discussing it when it is not pend-
ing for decision
1 Ona gain of ImpOrtance has been
made This does not affect tilt
i principle involved but may sub
stantlally affect the practices of the
open shop division The board of
Jr directors erected a committee from
fs its number to advise with the open
shop division on its practices ' Per
haps this committee will be able to
end the publication' of misleading
advertisements inviting tabor to come
to Oklahoma City promising em-
ployment which cannot be given It
l':' may end the practice of fighting
union labor by deliberately creating
an overplus of labor and consequent
idleness and dependence upon char-
y ity It may end the using of the
V name of the chamber of commerce
I in practices which are in effect
n anti-union instead of open shop
I
rWhile we feel strongly that the
open shop movement should be sup-
ported and operated outside instead
of inside the chamber of commerce
we still feel that all good citizens
regardless of their views on this
subject should support the general
t - program of that organization To
n fail to do so Is a case of "cutting
I oft your nose to spite your face"
iI The chamber of commerce has
: i achieved entirely satisfactory results
for the city In Many of its activities
(I and there should be no decrease in
the public enthusiasm for its major
program
4
The open shop is not the only
Y activity of the chamber of commerce
' A of which we do not approve But
several dozen strong minds cannot
meet and cooperate except by mutual
y concessions and the general acceptance
Pt of the principle of majority rule
4i A rule-or-ruin policy can mean only
0 ruin Wire men recognize these facts
P and compromise their views or sub-
mit to the will of the majority
0
f
l We believe that In general the
e
chamber of commerce is devoted to
- I the common good We bare watched
