Joan Lowell's father carried her
aboard his schooner a copra trader
in the south Pacific when she was
only II months old A she-goat pur-
chased for a broken alarm clock from
South Sea natives was her nurse For
17 years the only ground under her
feet was below 60 fathoms of water
Raised as a man by men as hard
as nails it is small wonder that Joan's
early ambition was to be able to swear
for three minutes without once re-
peating herself In fact she achieved
this distinction along with the
technique of spitting a curve to wind-
ward and If you think that's easy
try it
With the head of an Angel and a
fist like a hammer this little thug in
overalls (for she never knew what
dresses were paraded the deck of her
floating home looking for trouble
She found it—and how Her father
caught her Just in time one day when
she was going' ashore to have nude
Idles tattobed on her chest--Just like
the other sailors
To Joan women were soft fluffy
things that "smelled good" In her
floating world of men her own scx
was as inscrutable as the inhabitants
of another planet and her lint res1
etperlence with them pretty nearly
caused a riot
She found navigating on shore so
full of shoals that she feld back to
sea and there a member of the crew
casually showed her one night how
to maize a hangsman's noose A sure
and ghastly sense of drama impelled !
him to knot it ander his own left ear
and dance on the wind
On one of her rare visits ashore
a pedantic and pompous professor of
economics one told her: "You are a

very interesting study little girl"
The little girl's reply nearly made the
professor faint
Ghostly giant Icebergs water
spouts wild dances on lovely South
Sea atolls man-eating sharks that
followed the ship like wraiths and
the fact that young ladies should not
bathe in gentlemen's drinking water—
all these Joan Lowell learned about
and wove into her fantastic saga of
the sea
