RALSTON SAYS
Excel lot Business Forecast
For Whole Year By Motor
Sales Leader
'DOLLAR' VALUE GREATER
Better Regulated Production
1 And Selling Given Reasons
For Prediction
Viiparalleled property seems to be
I in stor efor the auto industry In 1929
says a E Reston assistant general
sales manager of the Chevrolet Motor
Co who is In the city Monday con-
! ducting the annual Chevrolet sales
1 meting and banquet
"There Is no sign on the indite-
) trial horizon that would indicate
a nething but excellent business
throughout the year" Ralston said
"We have many reasons to believe
! we may look forward to a record auto
year in 1929
i "If all Indications of prosperity re-
main favorable throughout the year
as I expect they will the auto In-
dustry should build and sell over 5-
230000 units in 1929 Tentative pro-
duction schedules set by the larger
rroducers the sound economic eon-
(ition Of the country more auto per
dollar than ever and the sound man-
egement under which all companies
are now operating are factors that
cause me to feel confident that new
ail-time production and sales recoms
will be established this year
On Is 'Happy'
"The outlook for business generally
Is a happy one In view of the grow-
ing practice of taking the automo-
bile as a barometer of the activity
expected In all lines of trade And
in this connection there is little ques-
' lion that the excellent prospects ahead
of the auto industry 'ror the year
should Influence general business in
a favorable way Activity in one line
inspires activity In another resulting
In a benefit to both
Although it probably will not be
required to play the role the auto
business according' to plans already
settled one should serve as a gen-
trator to general business in 1929
It promises to be the trail blazer to
new levels of prosperity
"We ate enterting 1929 with em-
ployment high and In fine shape
Tilts is a basic note In the optimistic
outlook before us Because of this
condition we are assured of a high
producing and buying power to In-
sure at the outset a regular flow of
useful materials through the chilli-
' nels of trade—which after all is the
best definition of prosperliy
' Working Full Time
"Manefacturing establishments gen-
erally throughout the country are
' working full time and basic indus-
tries are operating at 85 per cent ea-
' pecity or better
"One of the foremost reasons for
s the expected gain in the auto bus'-
riess this year is the record breaking
dollar value offered In the 1929 autos
especially those In the lower price
rang as
"Despite the progress manufactur-
ers have been making every year in
offering more auto per dollar In no
preceding year has the industry taken 1
i as great a forward step In this di-
rection Never before has so much
tfuto per dollar been offered to the
t public
t "Volume production better man-
agement more intelligent sales di-

tors to this higher dollar value found l

one of Detroit's most interesting and
Important institutions the new ex-

Here a multitude of far reaching
experiments are constantly under
way that the public may receive the
benefits of constant engineering
progress Here many of the advanced
engineering principles emOociled in
the new Chevrolet were developed
and perfected before the car was al-
lowed to go into production
While the experimental work pre-
ceding the Introduction of any new
Chevrolet feature has been one of
tho dominant factors contributing to
the success of the company this work
formerly was carried on in the sante
building with other operations Now
It is completely segregated with re-
sultant Ideal working conditions
Laboratory 14 Large
The laboratory building covers one-
fourth of a city block Is well lighted
a one-story structure of brick and
concrete and provides the most mod-
ern equipment the industry knows
It la In miniature a complete auto
factory capable of building an en-
tire car from rough castings to the
finished auto ready for the road On
these models some of them costing
$15000 contemplated improvements
are tried out in runs lasting thou-
sands of miles until there is absolute
assurance of the dependebility of the
refinements
Estahliahed for the purpose of fur-
thering the high standards of Chevm
let precision manufacturing methods
the experimental department also en-
gages in the production of advanced
types of motors and chassis These
cars unknown to and unseen by the
public frequently cost as much to
build as the most expensive type of
Imported car
In addition to the purely experi-
mental work exhaustive tests are
made of every part and accessory
used on the car
Parts Get Hard Test
Water pumps are operated at full
speed for days batteries are kept
in refrigerators at zero temperatures
for weeks to determine winter oper-
ating efficiency clutches gears and
axles are operated under heavy loads
until completely worn out oil dilu-
tion Is tested under all conditions of
heat and cold motors are run for
weeks with hope airplane propeller
blades furnishing the load um il some
vital part fails or is Worn out
The laboratory Is onlme40 miles from
the General Motors proving grounds
at Milford Mich where 1245 acres
of hilly country have been converted
into a gigantic road laboratory and
tcst ground Any new process or part
developed In the experimental labora-
tory is built into a car and some-
times several cars and these are
taken to the proving grounds and
there driven day and night until they
roll up 30000 to 50000 miles
Under that mileage any inherent
defect in the new part or process
will have developed The test ears
are then dismantled and the new I
feature minutely examined It no
undue wear is noted and the test
otherwise proves satisfactory the part
Is approved If not the engineers set
to work upon a new process or part
to replace the old and that in turn
undergoes the same rigid test This
cycle continues Until the new feature
