The clothing, packed away for the season in bright
new garbage cans, was "picked up" by a city garbage
crew last September.
In an effort to recoup the loss, Mrs. Crew filed a
$1,220 claim against the city—then later offered to com-
promise for $900.
White Flag is Raised
After weeks of deliberation, the council brought out
the white flag Tuesday. The city voted to pay her
$731.70 to outfit the family for the winter.
It was not without a struggle, however.
Councilman William E. Ware, Ward 2, moved to pay
the housewife $563.30—less than half the amount of her
original claim.
Councilman Lonnie Sage, Ward 3. noted the woman
offered to settle the claim for $900 and moved to split
the difference. Mrs. Crew said she would accept the
$731.70—and the claim for that amount was accepted.
The action was taken despite the belief by the city's
legal department that the woman could sue, but doubted
that she could collect.
Presumably, in the next few days, Mrs. Crew will
go on a shopping trip. _________

A meeting of shouting, booing and applauding pro-
ponents and opponents of the United Nations was quickly
brought to a halt Tuesday by Mayor Norick.
The mayor, who had delayed discussion of his proc-
lamation of October 24 as United Nations Day until after
a meeting of the city council, throttled the dispute by ad-
journing the session.
His action followed a statement by a University of
Oklahoma student, Barry Srago. 6001 N Vermont, who was
accompanied by eight OU political science majors.
