contemplate a better life in the year
ahead In the prayers of the service, the
Jewish congregants re-evaluate their own
lives and reinterpret God's command-
ments in more positive ways for the com-
ing year.
At home, the Holy Days take on a !
symbolic meaning for the family as they ’
dip a piece of apple or bread into honey ]
with a prayer that the year ahead will be I
sweet and blessed.
The basic purpose of the High Holy-
days, according to Rabbi Mervin B
Tomsky. spiritual leader of Emanuel |
Synagogue, is to move the worshipper to
invest his life with"’noble purpose, to j
seek spiritual growth, and to dedicate ।
himself to every endeavor which will im-

Church School 10:00 A.M.
The most sacred period for Jews
throughout the world, the High Holy
Days, marking the beginning of a new
year, will begin at sundown Friday with
the observance of Rosh Hashono. The
solemn Holy Day ushers in the Jewish
Calendar Year 5723.
Rosh Hashono inaugurates a ten - day
period of spiritual self-analysis and pray-
er, climaxed by the observance of the
tenth day. Yom Kippur. the Day of
Atonement (beginning at sundown, Oc-
tober 7).
Orthodox and conservative Jews ob-
serve Rosh Hashono for two days; Re-
form Jews for one. Services at temples
and synagogues will include the call to
conscience with the blowing of the an-
cient shofar (ram's horn) as a reminder
to the worshippers that the time has ar-

This, in effect, will be the
first real test of the
church's unusual design
concept.
St. Patrick's, a church

Jones-Murray. Of the de-
sign. architect Robert
