Flight Changes Genes
Hereditary changes took place in plants and insects
carried in Soviet space ship* but sctentists aren’t sure
Just what caused them.
Gene mutations in fruit flies brought back from orbit
were 11 times greater than in others kept on the ground
as controls. “Significant acceleration’’ of cell division
waa noted in the sprouts of peas, corn and wheat seed
flown in space capsules.
Scientists believe the increased mutations were not
canned by radiation. Comparable changes occurred in
both radiation-resistant and radiation-sensitive strains.
Take-off and re-entry stresses were also discounted.
The speculation is that some combination of fac-
tors in the space environment besides radiation or ac-
celeration brought about the changes.

Scientists working on
Project Mariner say there
are a number of reasons
for sending two space
probes to the vicinity of
Venus.
It'x the closest planet to
us, yet we know less about
it than stars billions of
light years away because
of its constant cloud cover.

There is an old French
word “boton’’, which means
a bud. And this word prob-
ably came from a still old-
er word “bouter", which
means "to push out" Our
word "button" comes from
these words, because this is
exactly what a button does.
It sticks out from whatever
it is attached to, ready to
be pushed out through a
buttonhole or loop to fasten
articles together.
