marks slashed in his checks re-
calls his days at the University
UT Iowa. He came home to take
a job in a grimy government of
rice in Sudan, wearily copying
documents and pushing files
around for the equivalent of $100
a month.
"Seven years have passed
since I left Iowa, and I have
hated every minute of it," the
young man said bitterly. "My
heart aches when I think of the
good times I had in America. It
would have been better if I
had never gone there "
Many Stay Away
. The young Sudanese is typical
of many others
Some do their best to stay in
the west. Iranian ministry of edu-
cation officials estimate, for ex-
ample, that 40 per cent of the
Iranians who go to the west to
study never return home.
Many others find their educa-
tion makes it impossible to ad-
just either at home or in the
west.
"Too many of our students
are absolutely ruined because
they go abroad and study too
young," an Egyptian educator
complained "They get im-
pressed with the western stand-
ard of living and the relatively
free social life. They come back !
despising everyting in their own
country
Graduates Adjust
"This problem is reduced by
50 per cent among those who
get their bachelor's degrees in
Egypt and then only do gradu- ।
ate study abroad "
This is one of the main rea-
sons the Egyptian government
now discourages undergraduates
from studying abroad. Students
on government scholarships are
not allowed to take undergradu-
ate study abroad except in fields
not taught in Egyptian schools.
The result is that the over-
whelming majority of Egyptian
students abroad now are grad-
uate students. And most of
these have already started ca-
reers in Eyept as teachers,
doctors,, etc.
