things of partisan "extravagance"
in it to comment on.

1 ’ 1,
their during his term in the White ;
House, he declared Wednesday
night "We respect fully the right
of all peoples, able and ready to
govern themselves, to be free to ;
do so.”
His stressing of NATO as an ac-
complishment. without admitting
how weakened it has hcome, may
get him into hot wsr with his
critics. Also his failure to spell
out, in the section where he dis-
cussed the communist threat to
the world, how the Russians al-
ready have won a dangerous foot-'
hold in the middle east.
But like any true political gen-
ius. the president put the best pos-
sible interpretation on everything
that has happened during his three
and a half years in power And he
did it in a way that undoubtedly i
will win him votes.
Never Had it M Good I
On the domestic front, he told
the folks, in effect, that they have
never had it so good. He had some
pertinent facts to back up this
claim-47 million jobs. higher
wages, better living standards
•'than ever known before."
He was not so politically naive
as to fill in the rest of the picture-
big patches of unemployment in
places like Michigan and Pennsyl-
vania and the worrisome problem
of personal debt accompanying ris
ing prices and what many regard
as an over extension of instalment
credit.
He had a word for labor—re-
minding them that great progress
had been made toward industrial
peace during his administration
and that the "free processes of col-
lective bargaining" had been trust-
ed and respected.

This new G-E Washer circulates, and filters
your wash water at the rate of six gallons
per minute. As the Filter-Flo Washing
System circulates the water, sand settles
out the bottom of washbasket, soap scum
floats away, lint is trapped in the filter.

For instance, in praising his ad- ”
ministration's handling of foreign :
affairs, he remarked. "We today
point to the nation of Vietnams
free "from communist rule."
What the president neglected to |
point out is that only half of Viet- 8
nam is free—the southern half, a
The northern half went communist i i

worked out with the communists. I]
There were some other remarks j j
he made, too, on foreign affairs I
which seem bound to draw are-
turn fire from his political oppon- ,
ents.
In enumerating some of the I
world's hot spots which had been |
calmed down under his adminis- 1I
tration, he said. "We have main- !
tained this defense of freedom
without recourse to war."
Out ef Focus
He neglected to add—since from j:
the Republican point of view it ‘
would have been silly for him to 11
do so—that, in the words of his ; I
own secretary of state, the nation . I
has been "on the brink" of war |'
over some of these hot spots.
Among the credits he listed for;'
his administration was the ending j ‘
of the war in Korea, bringing! I
"peace? with honor." The Demo-1'
crats always bum when they hear; ■
this They contend that they could |
have settled on the same terms!»
before Ike—but if they had, they 1 j
would have been accused of "ap
peasing communism."
On the question of colonialism, j j
Mr. Eisenhower had some things j |
to say, too, which may look some-!!
what. out of focus when matched :
against our voting record at the j
United Nations.
We Back Colonial Powers
Although we have repeatedly
sided with the colonial powers |
paign is his health, he dealt with
that at the very start of the speech,!
which was carried on a nation- j
wide television and radio network
by the Columbia Broadcasting Sys-!
tern
He did it in a casual, almost off-
hand manner—as if it' were only
an incidental aside—but with an
effectiveness calculated to pull the
rug from under the Democrats.
Confident of Future
"I am confident of my own
physical strength to meet all the
responsibilities of the presidency,
today and in the years just ahead.
If I were not so convinced. I would ;
never have accepted renomina-
tion to this office.
"I hope this conviction—this
peace of mind—may bring assur-
ance to many others, as I stand
ready to serve as your president
for another four years, if this be
your will.”
He followed this with the observa-
tion that he would now like to
speak "of greater matters" -as
though there could be anything
more important than his health.
Sticks to Lefty Plane
It was a fireside chat he gave
the nation, subtly underlining the ।
Republican slogan of "peace and I
prosperity.” And the words at the i
beginning could not have been ■
smoother if they had been spoken :
by the originator of the firesidej
chat—FDR himself.
