•. deciding which of the eight contender, to jinx.
Taking the easy way out, most observers have tabbed the only
3 Iwo clubs that showed here in 54, Oklahoma A&M and Arizona,
2 as co-choices.
But there is also strong support fnr Southern Cal, which
• coast tub thumper, are modestly describing as one of the most
remarkable teams ever assembled in collegiate ranks.
There’s always got to be a darkhorse, it seems, so that's the
; description being attached to Western Michigan's Broncos, who
blasted Big Ten titlist Ohio State out of the running in a playoff.
Then, just to keep their hoofs sharp, the Brones belted Notre
Dame, 15-10, last Sunday after spotting the Irishmen an 0-0 lead.
WAKE FOREST 1, drawing some backing, too, mainly because
W the Deacons got here bv taking a playoff from Rollins, which
captured spectators' hearts a year back by scrapping into the final,
with as unlikely a looking bunch of ballplayers as the tournament
has ever seen.
Nobody knew how the Rollin, pests ever got on base but
there they were stealing bases like crazy The pitching staff
didn’t even have an ace. just four or five guy, named Joe who all
looked like choir boys throwing softballs. But, somehow, batter,
couldn't quite locale their offerings
That s why Wake Forest is respected hereabout.,, the Deaeon,
having somehow worked out a formula for foiling the Floridans.
The other entrants? They're getting little attention, at
least in champion, hip figuring, because they represent area,
which meet year, aren't too tough.
This yardstick proved unreliable in '52. however, when Holy
Cross cruised all the way while bearing the banner of the same
district as Springfield, Mass. Oklahoma A&M s opening round foe.
The Springfields and Colgates have lost five times apiece
this spring, which further lower, their stock, but Colorado State
can't be low-rated on its won-los t record The Bear, won 16
straight in regular season play and, like Oklahoma A&M, weren t
tagged until the playoffs.
OKLAHOMA U scissored the Aggies’ 22-game skein in the play-
• off opener in Oklahoma City while Wyoming had the satis-
faction of whipping Colorado State before losing a best of three
series
Which team, then rate, the nod is favorite’ For the first
time in the history of the event, there can be no clear-cut choice.
Usually when confronted with a problem such as this, pickers
decide to discard the clubs which made it this far principally on
pitching or hitting and select the contender which seems to have
struck a happy medium.
That's impossible this time, however. Southern Cal, Ari-
zona and the Aggie, all come touted at well-balanced outfit,
with et least two top drawer chunker, and competent stick-
men all the way through the lineup.
Cowboy followers think they have the winning combination
in pitchers Tom Borland (9-0), Ken Kinnamon <10-11 and the now
arrived Don Anderson (3-0), plus a lineup of Freddie Babb (355),
Bonnie Bennett (.350), Jim Woolard (330), Phil Finegan (320).
Jerry Patrick (349). Mayo Hemperly (290), Don Booher ( 385)
and Don Bacon ( 268).
But look at Southern Cal and Arizona. The Trojans' team
hatting mark of 342 tops A&M’s by 19 points and the Wildcats
aren’t exactly distressed about their .314 figure.
