Housing Sets Mark
WASHINGTON—In the first three
quarters of 1990 an all-time record of
1,104,000 houses were begun, 48 per-
cent above 1949 levels. In October,
however, the rate of house building
fell, with only 103,000 starts regis-
tered. It was the first month in 1950
in which housing starts dropped below
1949 levels.

The plaque is in the room where
General Dawes was born. It once was

Put Your Summer
On Ice!
WASHINGTON, June 3- (P—The
Vnited States. Britain and their Ko-
gan war allies are due to start a new
inquiry this week into the possibilities
for an early hegotiated peace in Korea.
American officials Sunday said
there appears to be little the United
Nations allies, whose representatives
meet twice weekly at the state de-
partment. can do for peace which they
deal with the present situation in
Korea.
The next meeting of this group is
set for Tuesday. This weeks second
session will be Friday. Diplomatic au-
thorities said that undoubtedly work
will begin along lines of the British
proposal in one of these meetings.
The estimate of the situation held
by (op United States officials is that
barring a Russian determination to
plunge the world Into a much greater
war, the Korean conflict itself can
and will be ended eventually in a
negotiated peace.
The UN powers are not insisting on
what was known in World war II as
“unconditional surrender.” The Chi-
nese Reds are insisting on it at the
moment by keeping as their main ob-
jective the complete rout of all UN
forces from Korea. However, they have
taken such heavy losses on the field
of battle that sooner or later they will
have to give up this objective, in
, Washington's opinion, to accommodate
their political purposes to their mili-
tary power.
CARACAS, Venezuela-Caracas,
preparing to play host in 1953 to the
10th Inter-American conference, is
planning to have three new buildings
in University City ready for the dele-
gates’ use. Now on the drafting board,
“They think the Chinese armies
are progressively deteriorating. They
will tell you that to a man."
Then he commented perhaps it
just seems that way to the GI’s and
their commanders because they now
are skilled, professional fighters
themselves

no connection between his announce-

the obvious connection between peace

arises from belief that when the war
is ended it will be along the 38th

the armies are now roughly disposed.

WASHINGTON-The new view of
the Importance of iodine in the action
of the thyroid gland hormone was
suggested by studies reported by Drs.
. Frits Lipmann and Charles H. Du-
Toit of Massachusetts General hos-
pital. Boston, at the meeting here of
the National Academy of Sciences.
The specific action of the hormone
on metabolism and various body func-
tions msy depend on another property
of the hormone molecule rather than
on its iodine content, these scientists
1 reported.
The gland's need for iodine to make
its hormone has been the reason io-
dine is added to drinking water or
table salt in regions where it is lack-
ing in the water supply.
Similar Compound Tested
Drs. Lipmann and DuTolt tested a
compound similar to thyroxin, the
thyroid hormone, except that where
the gland product has iodipe in its
molecule, this other compound has
nitrogen-containing groups. This com-
pound, called tetranitro thyronine,
was made by the Glaxo Laboratories,
Ltd., in England.
It was tested on rata that had their
thyroid glands removed. The ani-
mals stopped growing, had a low
1 metabolic rate and such other signs
of thyroid lack as scaliness of the
tail. caked eyes and a rough fur.
Metabolic Rate Rises

thyronine, their metabolic rate rose

During the hearings, Jonkel filed
a supplementary list of 327,100 in

law requires such statements within
20 days after the election. Sen. But-

filed by his treasurer, Cornelius F.

Jonkel filed the supplementary
statement after Munday refused to
do so because be had not handled

Jonkel told the senators he "short-

Secretary of State Acheson told sen-

Such a statement coming from the

so regard his own words. They threw
