Central and Capitol Hill highlight
the midweek Mid-State baseball slate,
which Includes three games, at the
Redskin diamond Tuesday afternoon.
In other loop contests. Northeast
will be in action at Enid and Norman
visits Classen at Legion park.
Coach Earl Applebee’s Cardinals will
embark on their first contest of the
year. They are defending Mid-State
and elty champions.
Redskins Won Opener
Capitol Hill already has seen action,
drubbing Norman 13-1. Central's
schedule opener against Northeast last
morning," Tatum said Monday night,
“so, we'll just schedule an afternoon
workout. We might just carry on from
there and forget morning work the
rest of the way, since we're crowding
opening time for our coming after-
noon and night exhibitions."
Arrival of Mickey Burnett and Myrl
“Scooter" Hughes, Infielders, boosted
the training squad Monday to 24 play-
ers although Tatum lost part of his
"brain trust" when Eddie Camett,
manager at Borger, Texas, who has
been assisting in operation of the
camp, took a plane Monday for Bor-
ger to begin arranging for his own
camp to open Thursday.
Hughes is From Tulea
Hal Webb. Midland, Texas, skipper,
is still on hand, giving Tatum plenty
of help.
Burnett, a secondbaseman, is back
tor another trial with the Indians. He
appeared with Oklahoma City in 1949,
but was in Borger last year as busi-
ness manager and player.
Hughes, a 21-year-old shortstop from
Tulsa, started his pro career three
years ago at Pittsburg, Kan. He spent
the last two seasons at Midland, Texas.
Junior Don Raulston or freshman
Jimmy Hammond will get the start-
ing pitching assignment for the Cardi-
nals. Coach Don Van Pool of the
Redskins hopes to go with senior
righthander Wylie Sparks, who start-
ed the contest at Norman last week.
MeCullough Will Fitch
The big stickers for the Cardinals
are catcher Leon Henderson and out-
fielder Darrell Pierce. Capitol Hill's
plate power probably will stem from
backstop Bennie Rowland and first-
baseman Johnny Jones.
Northeast bossman Dick Krueger
has nominated freshman righthander
Melvin McCullough as his opening
moundsman. Enid is considered to be
one of the toughest teams in the Mod-
State loop. The Plainsmen own vic-
tories over Garber 13-2 and Shawnee,
13-4.

. . . The NAIB recently recognized
that by demanding that team* com-
mit themselves on tournament play
when the season start*.... Of course,

itself and this year has come up with
the best teams. . . . Maybe that’s

Harold Stockbridge, the Rice In-
stitute baseball coach, figures he has
the first holdout in collegiate records.

who earned his baseball letter for two
se .sons and looked like an even bet-
ter prospect after a summer with
the Columbus, Texas, semipro Red-
birds, refused to report this spring.
. . . Rex also plays football in the
autumn and decided he wanted a
fling at golf and his third spots let-
ter ... So for two weeks, Proctor
pounded the links and Stockbridge
pounded Rex’s ears with arguments.
. . . Like most holdouts, Rex finaUy
gave in.
