aviation cadet class which will be
graduated at Vance next Saturday, ac-
cording to Col Tom W. Scott, com-
manding officer of the base.
After completing basic training in
Texas, Hughes was sent to the Philip-
pines, where he served as a clerk with
an army detachment which was su-
pervising the organization of a Philip-
pine army Hughes states that while
he was on the small base near Manila,
he had a ring-side seat as Filipino
guardsmen repelled an attack by the
Huks. communist guerrillas on the is-
lands
After nine months dutv on the is-
lands from September, 1946 to May,
1947, he was sent to Okinawa, and it
was here that he served with the
foreign liquidation commisison. Hughes
was assigned to a small unit which was
selling surplus material to the Chi-
nese. The Chinese deported the ma-
lerial to Shanghai, where it was re-
conditioned and put back into active
service
Hughes. who holds a private pilot'*
license, gained through the GI bill,
enlisted in the airforce at Oklahoma
