Inferior Air Power
WASHINGTON, June 17.—(PP— A
proposal for the creation of a separate
air force under a new "department of
aviation" attracted ready support in
the senate Tuesday.
Senator McCarran (D . Nev.), who
introduced the legislation Monday'
told reporters that “we must have an
air force second to none in the world I
The only way to get It is to establish
it under an independent department,
where a secretary will have a voice at
the president's cabinet table"
He conceded that the measure was
bound to arouse formidable opposition
from the army and navy.
Chairman Reynolds (D N C> of
the senate military committee gave
wholehearted approval to McCarran’s
proposal, declaring:
“The lessons of this war, especially
Crete, have demonstrated that air
ix>wer can sometimes overcome both
land and sea power.
Chairman George (D Gai of the
senate foreign relations committee
said he was “inclined to favor” the
McCarran resolution, but added that
he had not fully made up his mind
regarding a separate air force.
Senators Connally iD. Texas! and
Hill (D.. Ala > both declared that a
separate air department, was not leas- ,
ible at present.
