The broadcast quoted from an ar-
tide by Pr Winschuh entitled 'Look-
ing Backward from the Year 2000
It said that again as in the World
War, the United States was thought to
be the "greatest profiteer" and gath-
ered almost all the world's gold, until
gold came to Im- valueless outside the
United states and the European eco-
nomic exchange system won over the
trade of South America Finally, the
United State, finding no other use for
its vast gold reserves, used the gold to
decorate public buildings and street
lamps.

WASHINGTON. July 22 (P- The
American council on public affairs,
holding that a long-range spending
program was essential to a "sound na-
tional economy," contended Sunday
that the Roosevelt spending program
had not been successful because it
was hegun too late and had not spent
enough.
The conclusions were advanced in a
survey by Arthur E Burns and Donald
S Watson, of George Washington uni-,
versity. The council is a private re-
0 B
"The spending policy of the 1930's,
the survey said, “must, indeed, stand
indicted, not for what it has done but.
rather, for its failure to develop the
potential strength of the new fiscal
technique. If public spending failed
in its goal of restoring relatively lull
employment, the responsibility must be
placed ii large measure on the method
of handling this policy"
The writers contended that what-
ever prosperity may result from the
preparedness program, depression is
inevitable. "The bigger the war pros-
perity," they said, ‘the bigger the
post-war depression ”

Stockers Slow Sale
Stocker And feeder supplies Almost
became too large for the demand on
Monday, and trading whs slowed
down for the first time in weeks.
Later the pressure became less ap-
parent, but the week closed with losses
averaging 25050c.
Stock calves up to 810.00 were con-
fin*d to veal-weight, whiteface steers,
although occasional heavier steer
calves brought $9.75. Stocker, heifer
calves brought up to $9.00, a few more
Good to choice red calves were mostly
unchanged at $7.50 @ 8.25, as were the
medium to good stocker calves at $6.00
rn 7 50. Only common calves brought
below $6 00 on replacement account.
Feeder steers were hardly sufficient
to accurately test the market, al-
though some sales on odd-lots were
recorded up to $8.25. Most medium
