ly deadlocked Saturday in trying
to choose a new leader, but forces
backing Walter Reuther seemed
to be gaining the upper hand
Top officials of the labor organ-
ization kept busy in a series of
’closed door conferences seeking to
center on a successor to the lata
Philip Murray.

Both camps claimed growing
strength and seemed headed for a

‘Peacemakers’ Busy
A number of the CIO leaden
wanted to avoid any public clash.
They were trying tn prevail on
both sides to come in an agree-
ment that would prevent any open
split and thereby possibly en-
danger the CIO’s future.
