when one person with an active

both obesity and heredity are large
contributors, youngsters seldom are

toms he listed as:
ONE. Ravenous and almost in-
satiable appetite.
TWO. Paradoxical weight loss.
It may amount to a pound a day
at its height
THREE. Unquenchanble thirst.
The youngster may consume three
or four gallons of water a day.
FOUR. Polyuria, an excess
amount of urine.
Quick Action Is Vital
The condition should be checked
within the first few weeks. Other-
wise the youngster will become
apathetic, irritable, drowsy, and
will eventually go into coma. It’s
a rapidly progressive disease in
children.
• Great advances have been made
in diabetic treatment since the dis-
covery of insulin in 1921, Dr. Rip-
py pointed out. Before that the
child wasted iway from a sturdy,
healthy, normal individual and
faced coma and death within a
year.
: Now, with diet and insulin, the
youngster is relatively sure of a
. normal life span.
It's 'Unrewarding'
2 Docotres like to teach children to
take their own insulin “because
they are usually more concientious
about it than the parents,” Dr. Rip-
py said. ...
Too often parents tend to over-
protect the child or to "spare" him
from the needle, the doctor said,
a "We find youngsters have a lot
more sense than we give them
credit for,” he added.
< The specialist warned doctors at-
tending the 22nd annual fall clinical
conference that treating diabetic
children is "unrewarding.”
A Lift Long Job
* "It takes a lot of patience and
knowledge on the part of the doc-
tor. The child is dying when he
first comes to you. From then on
you literally become the life-long
guardian of this child. If you do
iot wish to take on that responsi-
bility, turn the patient over to
someone who does.”
Local doctors are giving free
urinalyses during diabetic detection
“week, November 18 to 22.
