ANCHORAGE, Alaska— (P— Resi-

nothing any more of a daily proces-
sion which includes Wanda Hallstead,
a red wagon, a washtub and Butch.
Butch is a hair seal pup, rescued
a month ago when Earl Hallstead
found him lost from his mother and
in danger of starvation. Hallstead
turned the seal over to his 10-year-
old daughter, who proceeded to raise
him like any other pup—except that
his diet is all fish.
There is only one rub. Butch has
to have a daily swim. He declines
to slither from the Hallstead home

out at the trial. His hauls ranged
from typewriters and fur coats to his
relatively lesser meter takings. Once
he inspected the 50 meters of a large
London hotel and left a few hours
later with $285 in cash, a $2,000 fur
coat, and several hundred dollars
more in jewelry.
The hotel proprietor had new locks1
fitted to the meters. but a few weeks
later Davis was back, picked up an-
other few hundred dollars from the
meters and left a note: "These new
locks are no good. You ought to do
better than that."
But Davis' luck didn't always run
the same way. Once. after a haul of
some $4,000, which he left in his car
while celebrating the event in a bar-
room. someone robbed him! The car
was left, but the tires and the $4,000
were taken.
Typewriter Sale Traps Thief
Scotland Yard put some of their
best men on the case—but for 17
months it was pretty hopeless. The
only clue they ever got, was that the
thefts were noticed "after a gas in-
spector had been around." Then a
trace was found—Davis was identi-
fied trying to sell a stolen typewriter.
After that the end came fast, Davis
loved to talk about his work—how
the strongest and most intricate locks
held no secrets from him—but, he
talked his way right into jail. And for
all his diligent work, nearly 75 per-
cent of his loot was recovered.

CHICAGO. Aug 24 — (Wide World i
—Eight months of war seems to have ,
dulled the American taste for politics. !
Domestic issues have given way'
steadily to the stern job of beating
the axis. Since the primary elections
began last spring, voters appear to be
taking hardly more than an offhand
interest in local political fights, while
participation in elections has fallen
off sharply.
Voting Light
These trends showed up clearly Mon-
day in a group of seven representative
stales stretching from West Virginia
northwestward to Wisconsin. Primary
elections have been held in five—West
Virginia Indiana. Ohio, Kentucky and '
IIlino and thi oting has been uni
formly licht. In Ohio only 10 percent
of the population voted, and the num-
ber of ballots cast was the smallest
since 1922.
The pre-Pearl Harbor isolationism
of candidates was developing into an
issue in Wisconsin, Ohio and Illinois,
but in the rest the campaigns were
strictly local affairs.
Yet this group of states will send
103 represetnatives to Washington
next year. elect four United States sen-
ators, three governor- and an rmy of

Party Ratio Change Unlikels
A’, present the joint congressional
delegation from these states is about
evenly divided between Democrats and
Republicans With most incumbent -
renominated, with party lines erased
on the question of me war effort, it
appeared likely to political observers
that the ratio between the parties
would lay about the same after ihc
general election November 3.
