Commencement exercises are to
be held at Amber May 29 and
23rd. John Morris of the OCW
faculty will be speaker for com-
mencement on May 23rd. Abbott
Nelson has been named valedic-
torian of the 2951 class with Ar-
thur Loaf men salutatorian. May
21st is the date of the Amber
Junior High commencement with
the program given by the class
members.
Members of the Chrckasha fire
department have been going to
sc-hoo. They have already com-
pleted a course of 18 hours in
Kemble Entry" and are now
working on a thirty-hour course
in Ladder Practices.
Funeral services were held
during the past week in the
Brown Funeral Hume chapel for
Jerome t-Austin. aged 75 years
who died at his hume 1125 So.
rth St. Jr. The final services was
in charge of Rev. Paul W. Evans
pastor of the Frisco Methodist
church. Mr. Austin was a na-
tive ofTexas but came here in
1898 and had farmed ever since
until here tired a short time ago.
He is survived by two sisters
one ofiwhom is Mrs. Betty Is-
mert or Chickasha and two bro-
thers one of whom is Rev. Sam
Austin who has lived here and
has many friends in Grady coun-
ty. Burial was in Rose Hill cem-
etery under the direction of the
Brown Funeral Home.
Friday May 11. is a big day
for tlie flower clubs of Chickasha.
That day from 2 p. m. until
o'clock in the evening guests
will be welcomed at Epworth
Methodist church to view the
prize blooms of the two hundred
women who make up the mem-
bership of the eleven flower un-
its of the city. Mrs. John Rea-
vis is president of the council
of flower dubs. Mrs. Charley
Howery is publicity director.
Judges twill not be announced
until Rafter the exhibits are
judged from 11 a. m. to 1 p. .t
prior to the general exhibita for
the public. . Different garden un-
its will serve during the after-
noon and evening as hosts for
the show. Many special ar-

A beautiful musical program
was given Tuesday evening at
the First Baptist church as a
part of the city-wide observance
of National Music Week. Mrs.
Owen Vaughn was in charge of
the program. A piano cnaemble
directed by Mrs. C. E. Piott won
much praise. Members are Mias
Edith Decker Mesdames Charles
Smith Gerald Bednar A. Hon-
egger Verlin Mills Raymond
Culp A1 Wilson L. E. Woods
and James Taylor all members
of MacDowell Music Club. They
were assisted by the MacDowell
club trio made up of Mesdames
Jack Alluma Arden Boothe and
Raymond Culp with Mrs. James
Taylor as accompanist. Numer-
ous beautiful numbers both sung
and played giving an evening of
real pleasure to all who attend-
ed. Miss Bessie Lee Blackwell of
Sayre is to be the new Grady
County home demonstration
agent succeeding Miss Margaret
Horton whose resignation will
take effect June 1. Miss Horton
is to be a June bride r Miss
Blackwell is well known in Gra-
dy having served here both as
assistant agent and agent. For
the past four years she has been
agent in Beckham county.
Oak Hill community is the la-
test Grady county area to have
a home demonstration club. Miss
Margaret Horton organised the
41st in the county at Oak Hill
during the past week. The
group met in the home of Mrs.
Raymond Yoder. Mrs. John
Wamsley was elected president
Mrs. Curtis Mitchum vice presi-
dent; Mrs. Yoder secretary; Mrs.
D. M. S hockey reporter .and
Mrs. B. M. Clemmons song lea-
der. The dub to be known as
the Oak Hill Home demonstra-
tion club will meet the third
Thursday of each month with the
next meeting with Mrs. Mitchum.

Funeral services were held this
week for Mrs. Sarah Frances
Payne aged 84 years who died
during the past week at the home
of her daughter Mrs. A. J. Don-
aldson of 1428 South 10th Street
with whom she had been living
for six years coming here from
McAlester. The final service
was in charge of Rev. Paul Mor-
gen of the Calvary Baptist

Mrs. L. D. Major who now
lives in Albuquerque N. M.t but
for many years made her home
in Chickasha was painfully in-
jured few days ago in an auto-
mobile accident at Henrietta
Texas. She suffered two broken
ribs and a cracked knee bone.
Her brother R. J. Brown and
his wife with whom she was vis-
iting were sligthly injured. The
last few years Mrs. Major lived
in Chickasha she was house mo-
ther at Lawson Hall of OCW.
Grady county has a good rep-
resentation at the American Roy-
al Dairy Show being held in
Kansas City this week. Milking
Shorthorns that won high honors
at the district milking shorthorn
show at Pauls Valley have been
entered at Kansas City. Among
exhibitors are Don Schenk who
has a milking shorthorn bull and
a milking Shorthorn heifer.
Charles Dungan took these ani-
mals to Kansas City and will
assist in showing them. Neal
Von Tungeln of Meridian 4-H
club has a two-year-old cow and
a senior yearling heifer. Keith
Fitzgerald of Meridian 4-H is
showing a senior yearling bull.
Elmer Von Tungeln has entered
two cows and a junior heifer
while Roscoe Hendrix has a hei-
fer calf which he is showing.
Alvin Lowe president of the
Rodeo club announces that start-
ing Wednesday night of this
week calf roping and horse acti-
vities are to be held every Wed-
nesday night at the fairgrounds.
Members can now get their rodeo
shirts from Dewey Meade at the
Dixie.
W. L. Maxwell executive sec-
retary of the local YMCA went
to Dallas during the past week
to attend an aquatic clinic as a
part of the Red Cross and Y
life-saving and. swimming pro-
gram. The YMCA in Chickasha
conducts swimming programs in
July fallowing the dose of the
Red Cross swimming classes. Jo-
die Sevier is program chairman
for the Chickasha YMCA.
Miss Jeane Porter daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Porter of
1315 South 18th Street Chick-
asha was crowned OCW May
Queen this week at a picnic giv-
en on the OCW campus by mem-
bers of the student body and the
faculty. Seven candidates parad-
ed through an aisle formed along
the tennis courts. The lucky
winner was made known when
Dr. Dan Procter presented her
with a bouquet of roses. After
the crowning square dancing
was enjoyed on the tennis courts
with Monte Stark as caller.
Mr. and Mrs. Garland Davis
Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Link Jr. and
Mr. and Mrs. Wait Flood are
members of the local ABC club
who attended the sixth district
convention of that club at Ponca
City this week. Mr. Link is the
lieutenant governor of the dis-
trict Jim Gotcher. who is Grady
County forester announces 45000

Word has been received here
that members of the 45th divis-
ion now in Japan are to be quar-
tered at Camp Chitosse and
Camp Crawford. These are near
30 miles apart and are in Hok-
kaido which is the center island
of the Japanese chain.
Capt. Ivor Williams who is
head of the local Salvation Army
in Chickasha presented plaques
to the board members at a re-
cent meeting in recognition of
their fine work during the par.
year. New officers elected to di-
rect the board are Norman Frye
chairman; Mrs. Charles Hoover
vice chairman; O. K. Holsapple
treasurer and George Yates sec-
retary. Owen Vaughn was in
charge of the session. Others
who attended the meeting were

Bob Rose and Mrs. Williams.
At the state district conven-
tion of ABC clubs held at Ponca
City this week A. C. Link Jr.
of Chickasha was elected gover-
nor of the 'sixth district of the
organization. . Lloyd Muegge of
Chickasha has been made secretary-treasurer
for the 6th district
The 1952 convention is to be held
In Chicfcartia.
Fred Stephenson of Chickasha
has been elected chairman of the
Piomingo Boy Scout district com-
mittee succeeding Homer Huime
who has heeded the committee
for the past year. The district
was given the Bison track award
for the 4th time. June 4 is the
date announced for.the annual
meeting of the Black Beaver Boy
Scout Council at Lawton at
which representatives from
Chickasha Tuttle and Alex will
be present. Summer camp dates
for Camp Thomas sre June 10-18
June 17-23 July 5-14 with July
15-21 set for Negro units.
The county 4-H Achievement
Day ia to be held Friday in
Chickasha at 509 Chickasha Ave-
nue starting at 9:45 in the morn-
ing. Model meetings dress

county medals and bonds are to
be presented during the morning.
This will be followed by a free
movie for parents and 4-Hers and
their coaches after which all will
go to Shanoan Springs for lunch
and an afternoon of fun.

in piano recital Sunday afternoon
at three o'cock in the auditorium
of the OCW. She is an excep-
tionally taented musician.

drive announces $3038 has been
collected in the campaign which
has recently been carried on.
Lynn Hale of Minco and Cecil
Wilfong of Newcastle formerly
of Chickasha received superior
and excellent ratings at the slate
instrumental contest in Stillwa-
ter. Don Wilcox of Chickasha
received an excellent rating on
his clarinet solo. Stanley Rich-
ison was given superior on his
tufritone solo. CHS band direct-
ed by Glenn Stark received ex-
cellent on sight reading. Miss
Jevita Jell won excellent on a
violin solo Buster Baxter excel-
lent on a baritone solo. Miss
Mona Stark received excellent
in piano solo and good ratings
were given to Don Tibbetts cor-
net solo- CHS band in concert
playing and George Dutton as
student director.
Members of the Chickasha
Lions club are completing plana
far the paper drive which is to
be held this coming week-end
according to President Dewey
Meade. The paper is to be stor-
ed until there is a more favorable
market for it Half of the funds
raised wili go to the local high
school band and the other half
will be tued in Lions activities.
Pickups are to be made down-
town on Saturday and in the
residential district on Sunday.
Leo Graham and Lawson Hop-
kins are co-chairmen in charge
of the drive. Rural districts are
asked not to bring in their paper
at this time as storage charges
are high.

day after he was severely burn-
