When did die students get all

Chuck's favorite comic involves
him in things like the watery
atmosphere of Venus and the
dreaded "space madness that can
attack even so intrepid a hero as
Ms beloved captain of tha Inter-
Galactic Patrol.
One evening he was reading its
latest issue on die aun porch. Set-
tled comfortably against ter-
restrial cushiona be was circling
a strange asteroid wife his cap-
tain when hia mother interrupted.
"1 want that trash taken out to the
Incinerator right now" she said.
Chuck closed his eyes. Then ha
said wife agonized self-pity "Cant
you leave me alone for a minute?
Cripes cant I ever have a min-
ute to myself?
After a pause his mother said
AH right darling. When you get
back to earth."
Tha next evening her favorite
friend telephoned her. She was
about to start fee sweater she'd
been promising to make for
Chucks mother. Tom between the
advantages of a cardigan and
Upon Chucks mother was deep-
ly concentrated on her decision
when he burst into die hall yell-
ing "Ms where's that half bottle
of coke I left in die refrigerator?'
Into the telephone bis mother
said "Ill call you back. Then
hanging up she said to Chuck:
"Now look her. Last night when
you were reading your comic I
was careful to let you finish it in-
stead of making you attend to
what I wanted. I realized that
finishing it was mare Important to
you than getting the trash out was
to me. I want the same politeness
from you. When you see I'm busy
on the phone dont interrupt me
unless you have something ready
important to say."
Chuck began to make a real
effort to control his Interrupting
habit. Because his mother hod
timed her demand for courtesy
from Mm to his recent experience
of it from her he got a true lesson
in manners.
What was bad in the old method
of teaching politeness to children
s the way it was forced on
them from the outside. They were
forced to give consideration' to
others before they'd learned to
prize it themselves. That was all
that was bad in the old method.
We need never fear to ask con-
sideration from a child who has
been given It by us. His own ex-
perience has taught Mm its worth.
When we art Mm for it we are
not imposing our values on him
but drawing on hia own.
