Oklahomans will suffer from state legisla-
tors’ inability to pass a budget lor Fiscal Year
2018.
Because the latest proposal — Step Up
Oklahoma — failed all state agencies may be
forced to take 2 percent cut in I unding from
March through June.
Candidates were elected to run government.
A huge portion of that responsibility is to fund
government.
Lawmakers have failed multiple times to do
their job
They failed last year when the Legislature
passed a budget based on what would later
turn out to be an unconstitutional cigarette tax
They failed in a special session after Gov
Mary Fallin vetoed much of their plan.
And so far they have failed in a second spe-
cial session, which is running concurrently
with the regular session.
Lawmakers are being stubborn to the point
of placing Oklahomans in harm’s way because
they won’t make the tough decisions and com-
promises for which we elected them.
Failing to produce a budget diminishes the
quality of education, health care, human ser-
vices.
Yes. there are ways to cut the lai from oper-
ating costs.
But Oklahoma lawmakers are supposed to
set priorities through budgeting instead ol
having every agency in the crosshairs because
they failed to do their job.
