“Imagine."
It's a great song, perhaps the
most iconic of John Lennon s
remarkable career.
It became Lennon's most criti-
cally acclaimed and commercially
successful song and was named one
of “Rolling Stone” magazine’s
"500 Greatest Songs of All Time."
Released in 197 I on the album of
the same name, the song calls on
listeners to consider a world with-
out borders or divisions, a world at
peace.
Today it is difficult if not impos-
sible to fathom the possibility of
living in such a world.
We seem to be more divided than
ever these days, by politics, reli-
gion and race, just to name a lew.
We live in a world gripped by
anger and hatred. Nation stands
against nation, party against party,
neighbor against neighbor.
We live in a world in the throes of
pain. People are suffering across
the globe, perhaps nowhere more
so than in Puerto Rico, devastated
by Hurricane Maria.
The people of that stricken island,
our fellow Americans, lack the
basic necessities of lite and face a
catastrophic humanitarian crisis.
So let's take a cue from John

Imagine a world in which every
human being was equally valued,
no matter what.
Imagine a world we cared for and
didn't defile with plastic, chemi-
cals. Styrofoam and other such
toxic waste.
Imagine a world in which we all
loved our neighbor as ourselves.
Imagine if we lived by the 10
Commandments rather than fight
ing over whether or not to place
them on public property.
Imagine it every person, every-
where. was afforded the right to
hie. liberty and the pursuit of hap
piness.
Imagine a world in which nobody
lied. nobody stole. nobody took
advantage of anyone else.
Imagine a world in which you
never had to watch your children at
play because you knew the neigh-
bors were caring lor them just as
you would for their kills.
Impossible'.’
Of course. It could never happen,
given the nature of man.
But just imagine it each of us
tried just a little bit harder to take
the first small step toward creating
such a world.
It's easy if you try.
Lennon and do some heavy duty
imagining.
Imagine that we didn’t hate or
fear those w ho don't look and think
like and vote like us.
Imagine we all looked at each
other as members of one. huge,
extended human family, rather than
as someone of whom we must be
wary.
Imagine if we saw ourselves as
equal to others, rather than some-
how superior.
Imagine if we were far more con
cerned with taking care of one
another, rather than striving to
become the best, the richest, the
biggest, the baddest.
Imagine if we cared as much
about our fellow human beings as

we do about the latest toolball
scores.
Imagine if nobody was hungry,
nobody was sick, nobody lived in
pain or fear.
Imagine a world in which every-
one was smiling rather than simply
’ gritting their teeth Imagine a gov-
ernment that functioned for the
I people, rather than for the party or
I political ideal.
Imagine a world in which a per
l son's status wasn t based on what
I they earned or what they owned,
but how much they loved and were
loved in return Imagine if we treat
cd each other with respect, even it
we did not see eye to eye
Imagine a world without hunger
or illness, poverty or neglect. abuse
or discrimination Imagine a world
where armies and navies were
strictly for show
Imagine if kids could go to school
without fear of being bullied, and
the same was true of their teachers.
Imagine life without the limits
imposed by social norms and tiled
old traditions.
Imagine a Christian praying next
to a Muslim, praying next to a Jew.
while an atheist looked on and did
not pass judgment or heap scorn or
invective upon them.
