the Cardinal (1-1) last season.
"The mindset with Texas is a
little scary," Willingham said
"it's rare that you see the overall
talent that they have. This is a
very good, solid football team
that gets your attention very
quickly."
Most of the attention at
Texas has been focused on the
quarterback derby between
Major Applewhite and Chris
Simms.

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) --
Eric Heitmann remembers look-
ing up at the scoreboard in
Austin last season and seeing
Stanford down by 52 points to
Texas - with nearly 10 minutes
still to play.
It gave the Texas native, a
Stanford offensive guard, a feel-
ing he could have done without.
"It was terrible to lose like
that in front of people you
knew," Heitmann said. "It was a
bad, bad loss, but that really
made it a little worse."
A season ago. the Cardinal s
season-opening 69-17 loss al
Texas was the most embarrass-
ing early defeat in a season full
of humiliating setbacks for Pac-
10 teams. The rematch is set for
Saturday night at Stanford Stadi-
um, where the No. 5 Longhorns
will look to improve on their
highest ranking since 1990.
The Cardinal recovered to
win the conference tide and play
well against Wisconsin in a
Rose Bowl loss, but even then,
the stigma of suffering Stan-
ford's worst defeat since 1954
stuck with the returning players.
"It's not revenge because
Texas deserved to win that game
the way they did." said safety
Aaron Focht. a backup last sea-
son who will be expected to help
the Cardinal contend with Texas
strong passing.
"We were just disappointed
that we weren't more ready to
play. We think we'll be ready
this year."
But staying with the Long-
horns (1-0) will be a tall order,
particularly given Stanford's
unimpressive defensive perfor-
mance so far this season. Coach
