The National Foundation for

cosponsoring the "Heart of the
I Patriot” Essay Contest for col-
| lege-bound female high school
seniors.
The National Foundation for
Women Legislators (NFWL)
does not take positions on public
policy, but provides women leg-
islators and members of Con-
gress with strategic resources,
including opportunities for net-
working leadership skill devel-
opment, as well as debates and
briefings on various issues.
The contest’s seven finalists
will receive a $3,000 college
scholarship and an all-expenses-
paid trip to NFWL's mid-
November Annual Conference
in New Orleans.
Senator Carol Martin, a mem-
ber of the NFWL, said this
would be an excellent opportuni-
ty for local members of the Class
of 2001.
“This contest will help seven
young women ignite their pas-
sion for public policy, examine
the historical roots of the Bill of
rights, and develop their leader-
ship skills, as well as earn schol-
arship funds to help them attend
college," explained Senator
Martin.
"Watching the movie 'The
Patriot’ this summer made us all
think about what role women
played in the American Revolu-
tion, and what motivated them
I’m glad that the NFWL and the
NRA are encouraging young
women to research and explore
women’s patriotism and the sac-
rifices women have made for our
freedoms since Colonial times,”
said Martin.
Contestants may choose from
among three sets of essay topic
questions relating to (1)
women's patriotism during the
American Revolution, (2)
women’s patriotism today, and
(3) the meaning of the scenes
and characters from the film
“The Patriot.”
The deadline is October 12,
after which a joint NFWL and
NRA committee will judge each
