Bob Barry was the keynote speaker when
approximately 50 Chickasha business owners, res-
idents, and supporters of United Way of Grady
Count, met for the Campaign 2001 Kickoff lun-
cheon. Friday at the USAO Regents' Room. A goal
of $110,000 was set. Among the highlights of the
meeting were the announcements of a $15,000
donation from the customers of First National
Bank, and $1,2000 contribution from the Rotary
Club, to jump-start the 2000 campaign.
Bob Martin, of KWCO, former president of the
Grady County chapter, served as emcee. Mark
Geurkink, current president, led the invocation and
introductions.
Terry Winn, co-campaign chairman spoke on
Campaign 2000, stating that Grady County had
been divided into twenty-one segments. He point-
ed out the need for two more volunteer “captains”
to head the campaign, as there are currently only
19. He announced this year's campaign goal is
$110,000, which he considered “pretty modest for
a community as blessed as ours."
Keynote speaker, Bob Barry, native Oklahoman
and member of the Sportscaster’s Hall of Fame
compared United Way to a football or basketball
team, with emphasis on the word “teamwork."
Barry reminded the gathering of the days when
individual charities all had to solicit funds on their

Chickasha hires two
new police officers

I . Two new officers were hired by the Chickasha Police Department
I this week, bringing the number of vacant slots down to six. The pair
I come on board just two months after new officer Chad Minson joined
I the department. Two more new recruits are expected to be on board
I within the next two weeks.
1 , Twenty-two year old Anthony Riley, a 1996 Chickasha grad, and
I Christine Moran, 23, are being fitted for uniforms and duty gear this
| Capt. Lynn Williams reported a new training program is being
I implemented within the department. Riley and Moran will be cross-
I trained with both patrol skills and the ability to work in the commu-
I nication center. Williams said that if a man-made or natural disaster
I of the magnitude of the May 3 tornado struck Chickasha, all the
I Chickasha Police dispatchers working at once might not be able to
| handle the volume of calls. Cross-training officers will enable more
I officers to help with dispatching should the need arise.
I After Riley and Moran complete their training in the dispatch cen-
I ter, the pair will go through 19-weeks of Field Officer Training in
I which they will patrol with a seasoned officer and then 12 to 14
1 weeks of training with the Council of Law Enforcement Education
I and Training.
I Riley, a former Grady County Family YMCA employee, reports
I he has always had an interest in law enforcement.
“I’ve always wanted to do something to help people," Riley said
Riley is the son of Vem and Joyce Riley of Chickasha
I Moran, a former juvenile tracker, is a 1995 graduate of Rush
I Springs. She is married to Keith Moran and the couple have two chil-

Cannons to be
set off to help
deter bird nesting
Starting the week of Sept. 18.
Chickasha Animal Control will be
setting off bird cannons in different
areas of town to help control the
bird population.
These cannons will be set on 30
to 50 second intervals and will only
be set off between the times of 7:30
to 9:30 p.m.
