Raps Criticism Of
Foreign Policy
Wuhinf ton' Aug. 20 (J) Ser-
rctury Ickes calling Wendell Will-
kie s criticism of President Roose-
ell's handling of foreign affairs
ill-considered and demagogic'
has termed the Republican party
the party of appeasement."
In a radio address described as
a reply to the Republican presi-
dential nominee's acceptance
speech the interior secretary last
night asserted:
The Republican party in 1848
contains the equivalent of Eng-
land's and France's pro - Nasi
Munich appeasers of MSS the
men with the black umbrellas."
Ickes said that Willkie was a
member of Tammany Hall and in-
dicated that he considered him
an admirer of the late Samuel
Insull utilities operator. Both
statements were promptly termed
plain and simple falsehoods." by
Willkie in a statement in Rush-
ville Ind. last night
Willkie added that he was as-
tonished that the president vt the
United States should authorize
such a speech."
Willkie wired Chairman Joseph
Martin of the Republican Nation-
al Committee to waste no money
in buying radio time to answer
Ickes. It Is unworthy of answer.
(It had been planned to ' have
Senator Bridges (R) New Hamp-
shire make a reply.)
Willkie Ickes said had Joined
Tammany Hall in 1930 fought
in its ranks and has not resigned
to this day.
Ickes also claimed that Will-
kie had once praised lusull as
a forceful dynamic and at-
tractive figure" while thous-
ands ef others execrate Insell
aa the man who ruined them."
The statement of Mr. Ickes that
I am or ever was a member of
Tammany Hall" Willkie said
and his implication that I ever
approved of the activities of Sam-
uel Insull or that I have any
business connections of any kind

New York Democratic Na-
tional Chairman Edward J. Flynn
asserted that Willkies acceptance
speech demonstrated that he be-
lieved in most everything that
the Roosevelt administration has
accomplished.'
Albany N. Y. Norman Thomas
Socialist president candidate ap-
plauded" Willkie's challenge to
President Roosevelt to debate
campaign issues and invited the
Republican nominee to debate
with him regardless of Mr. Roose-
velt's acceptance.

acceptance speech as a presidential
refusal to meet him in Joint de-
bate. Wendell L. Willkie gave this
statement to reporters today:
Lincoln did not think it was
unworthy or undignified to de-
bate and neither did Daniel Web-
ster. I am going to keep on asking
for the debate boys.
The Republican presidential
nominee who on Saturday chal-
lenged President Roosevelt to a
series of face to face" platform
arguments listened by radio last
night to Ickes address accusing
him of unpatriotic demagoguery"
ind unpardonable references" to
the chief executive.
Hastily calling a secretary he
dictated a statement te Joe Mar-

ing I am net surprised that
Ickes would steep te such levels.

In his attack on the Republican
party Ickes said:

who were caught conferring in

Of course Mr. Willkie added
the usual Republican promises.

The telegram had Just been is-

burst into the hotel press room
here and added the Lineoln-Web-ster
comment which he reserved
for publication today.
Willkie telegraphed Martin that
he should waste no money In
buying radio time to answer
Ickes" adding that the speech is
unworthy of answer. He said la-
ter Senator H. Styles Bridges of

something to say this afternoon
concerning it.
The nominee's original plan had
been for Bridges to reply for-
mally to Ickes in a radio address.
