progressive business firm finds that it needs to be con-
stantlv.makic.plSJv WlPiids and creating a new circle of customers
if it 711st dcpimil!. on'satiKfying those who" have previously bought
its goods' it is likely to see its trade diminished. Population
clianges more rapidly now than formerly and if a firm has a certain
list of customers this year it can expect as the result of all the
changes that naturally occur that a .considerable proportion of
those customers will not be on the list in a year or two.
V Also people are changeable in their habits and unless a very
energetic effort is made to hold old customers by advertising a
lot of them will go elsewhere attracted by the various induce-
' ments that are offered them.
People arc not much inclined as they were often formerly
just to trade at one place or a few places right along year after
year. They are quick to get the idea if some firm seems to he
hustling a little harder than its competitors to please the people
and no feeling of habit or sentiment of loyally is apt to hold them
if they think they can do hotter by going elsewhere for something
I they want. .
By an active campaign of advertising a firm can keep making
new business friends to make up for those who drift elsewhere.
. It does. not .take elalxirate persuasion to win such new customers
' in these times. .. .r -
People are ready to 'go to any place of business where the
1 spirit of enterprise and hustle seems to prevail.. A concern that
makes it a regular practice to advertise even if it does not tal.c
j iany great amount of space will have a constant stream of inquirers
entering its doors who will more than make-up for old customers
who' go elsewhere.

V Tbesf ijvords; ff Franklin .written 'front France to the com-
mander of thi American continental armies have a striking signifi
cance as applied to the philosopher himself. In his day Franklin
honored as he was by his fellow-countrymen enjoyed among them
no such profound regard as was accorded him in Frahce or jicrhaps
in England. ILe was .the first American writer whose works were
translated into Italian. In England before the outbreak of the
Revolution he had won high regard. His homely sagacious coun-
sel. since his death has been spread in nearly evjsry tongue.
No other American has won recognition comparable to that
accorded Franklin in so many branches of knowledge and activity
and in few of the departments to .which he set himself was he
- excelled by contemporaries in Ame'rica. He was an outstanding
example of greatness in versatility. .

And yet Franklin is remembered. 'chipfly by generation net
so much for what he did as for what he said. Those simple homely
proverbs that gave Poor Richard a circulation .of 10000 copies in
the ct.onics are still the cornerstone pi his reputation. He is one of
- the few men who' have given gratuitous dvicel and.'profited by it.
. Franklins advice was weiconjed because it;1 was plain undcr-

he preached. He 'was affable unassuming generous' thrifty! but
withal courageous and daring for great causes.
On Monday. January 17 it will he 221 : years' since Bpnjainin
Franklin was born. The passing of another two centuries will sec
many gfoat names added to America's Roll of Honor but few
indeed will outshine that of Poor Richard. His fame grows with
the years. : : !
By common consent the name of Benjamin Franklin .is recog-
nized as a synonym for sensible 'living. The great philosopher was
the author of scores of maxims inculcating the idea of thrift.
During the last few years a national movement which is designed
to impress the lesson of thrift upon the minds oi the American
people was Ixirn and has been growing year by year. Thrift Week
fittingly. begins jr;h Jtye celebration of Franklins birthday. Plans
