of Valentines Day
_____by Tasha Morris
Valentines Day originated in
5* Century. Rome. It all
began when the Lupercian
holiday was traditionally
celebrated during Mid
February, which was an epic to
the God of Fertility and a
celebration of sensual desire.
In other words it was time
congregate and seek after a
future date. The Pope Gelasius
did not like this celebration, so
in AD 496 he outlawed the
pagan holiday. Although he
outlawed it. he replaced it with
a similar celebration, which he
thought was more suitable,
therefore he needed a “lovers"
saint to substitute the pagan
deity Lupercus and the
martyred Bishop Valentine
was chosen as the patron saint
of the new festival.
Soon after. Saint Valentine
was sentenced to execution for
aiding youthful lovers in
marriage despite the emperor
Claudius's wishes. This made
Claudius very angry so Saint
Valentine was to be beheaded.
While Valentine was in jail he
fell head over heels for the
jailer’s daughter. He wrote a
final love note to her before his
demise and signed it “From
Your Valentine", a phrase that
has lasted throughout the
centuries.
The pagan festival died out.
but Pope Gelasius didn't get
everything he wished for, he
wanted people to further follow
the lives of saints. But, they
liked the more romantic life of
Saint Valentine and latched
onto this aspect of his religious
life. Now, the celebration of
true love is celebrated by
Valentine’s Day instead of the
