children died from abuse and ne-
glect, while 39,927 children were
confirmed to have been abused or
neglected.
In an attempt to identify the fac-
tors related to this significant in-
crease in child abuse deaths, re-

Oklahoma City recently completed
a five-year retrospective study, re-
viewing data from the state’s De-
partment of Human Services. The
study covered the years 1987
through 1991, and was conducted
by Terri M. Gallmeier, Ph.D., for-
mer assistant professor of pedi-
atrics; Sheila M. Thigpen, research
assistant; and Barbara L. Bonner,
Ph.D., director of the Education and
Research Branch of the university’s
Center on Child Abuse and Neglect.
Among the results obtained:
•More children died from head
trauma than from any other form of
abuse (28 percent).
•"Shaken Baby Syndrome” and
general neglect also were significant
causes of child fatalities.
•Children at highest risk of death
from abuse or neglect were infants
age one year and under, fifty-four
percent of the victims were under
age two.
•Fifty-seven percent of the vic-
tims were boys; 43 percent were
girls.
•In cases in which the relation-
ship of the alleged abuser was
known, 51 percent of the children
were killed by their father, stepfa-
